The Hong Kong trainers’ championship enters another pivotal stage on Wednesday night at Happy Valley Racecourse, where Mark Newnham will look to continue one of the most successful campaigns of his career with a powerful eight-runner team.
The Australian trainer has emerged as one of the standout figures of the 2025/26 Hong Kong season, sitting on 52 wins and closing steadily on championship leader Danny Shum ahead of the 75th fixture of the term. With only 88 meetings scheduled this season, every metropolitan programme now carries growing significance in the title race.

Newnham’s strongest chance on Wednesday appears to be Armor Golden Eagle in the Class 3 Sauternes’s Cup Handicap over 1650 metres after the gelding’s commanding success at the course on 29 April.
The lightly raced runner, who arrived in Hong Kong from New Zealand with an unexposed profile, has progressed rapidly through the grades after taking time to adapt to his new surroundings.
“He came fairly unexposed from New Zealand. It took him a little while to settle in,” Newnham said. “He dropped to Class 4 and won straight away, and now he’s a Class 3 winner.”
Armor Golden Eagle produced a dominant display in his latest appearance, winning by nearly four lengths, and will again be partnered by champion jockey Zac Purton.
“He had a perfect run throughout, and he’s drawn to get another good run tomorrow,” Newnham said. “You just don’t see too many win off a 10-pound penalty, but he’s maintained his form well.”
The trainer added that the gelding pleased the stable in a recent trial and is expected to remain highly competitive despite the rise in weight.
“He had an easy trial last week, so I’d expect him to run very well,” he said.
The season has already been a landmark one for Newnham, highlighted by major victories with Invincible Ibis in the BMW Hong Kong Derby and My Wish in the Group 1 Champions Mile. Those headline successes have elevated the stable into the upper tier of Hong Kong racing and strengthened Newnham’s growing reputation since relocating from Australia.
“It’s been a great year,” he said. “Any year you have more than 50 winners in Hong Kong is a good year, and we’ve won a Derby and a Group 1. Anything from this point is a bonus.”
Wednesday’s fixture will also feature championship contender David Hayes, who saddles six runners as he attempts to reduce the gap to Shum. Hayes currently has 49 winners this season and will rely heavily on in-form sprinter Honest Witness in the Class 3 Seine Handicap over 1200 metres.
Honest Witness will also be ridden by Purton, who stands just two victories away from becoming the first jockey to reach 2,000 wins in Hong Kong racing history.
Elsewhere on the card, Karis Teetan teams up with Mr Cool for trainer Frankie Lor in the Class 4 Rhine Handicap over 1650 metres after a series of encouraging recent performances.
The nine-race Happy Valley programme begins at 6.40pm local time with the Class 5 Dordogne Handicap over 1200 metres as the pressure continues to rise in Hong Kong’s fiercely contested trainers’ championship.
Newnham’s rapid rise in Hong Kong has been one of the season’s defining stories. Having already established a strong reputation in Australian racing before relocating, the trainer has adapted quickly to the demanding local circuit and consistently challenged the established ranks throughout the campaign.
His stable has combined depth with elite-level success, particularly through Invincible Ibis and My Wish, while several emerging runners have continued to progress through the grades at Happy Valley and Sha Tin. With the championship race entering its closing phase, every metropolitan fixture now carries added importance as Newnham attempts to sustain pressure on the leading trainers during the final stretch of the season.
