Ludlow Racecourse is set to stage an exciting six-race National Hunt card on Sunday, 10 May, featuring a mix of novice hurdles, staying handicap contests and competitive steeple chases. The meeting promises an entertaining afternoon of jump racing, with horses tackling distances ranging from just under two miles to nearly three miles around the picturesque Shropshire venue.

The highest prize race on the card comes at 2:17 pm with The Radnor Hills Water Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle Race (Class 4), worth £10,000. Seven runners are declared for the opening contest over 1m 7f 169y, and the race looks set to provide a strong start to the afternoon.

Dan Skelton saddles the experienced mare Bluey, who arrives in winning form after a consistent campaign and carries the highest official rating in the field. The six-year-old competes off a mark of 118 under 11st 9lbs. Nigel and Willy Twiston-Davies introduce Bits Ballou, while Henry Daly is represented by both Briery Rose and Silvereen. Jamie Snowden’s Enya, a lightly raced filly with encouraging placed form, also adds interest to the line-up alongside Peace of Amaron for Debra Hamer and Dame In Disguise from the Max Young stable.

The contest combines proven hurdle experience with several unexposed mares still capable of improvement. With Ludlow’s sharp track often rewarding tactical speed and neat jumping, the opener could produce an informative result for the remainder of the spring jumping season.

At 2:52 pm, the focus shifts to staying hurdlers in The Lion Leintwardine Novices’ Limited Handicap Hurdle Race (Class 5). Carrying prize money of £7,500, the race will see eight runners tackle an extended 2m 7f 174y. Stamina is expected to play a major role, particularly over the demanding closing stages where Ludlow’s uphill finish can test even the strongest stayers.

The afternoon’s feature chase arrives at 3:27 pm with The Radnor Hills Splash Handicap Steeple Chase (Class 4) over 2m 7f 171y. Six runners are declared for the £9,000 contest, which is likely to become one of the most tactical races on the programme. Experienced chasers and progressive stayers meet in a race where clean jumping and patient riding could prove decisive.

Race four at 4:02 pm is The Welsh Guards Association Handicap Hurdle Race (Class 4), worth £8,500. Seven runners are set to compete over 1m 7f 169y in what looks a competitive middle-distance hurdle. The shorter trip may encourage a lively early pace, with several runners expected to challenge entering the home straight.

The mares return to the spotlight at 4:37 pm in The GC Rickards Mares’ Handicap Steeple Chase (Class 4). Although only five runners are declared, the £9,000 contest over 2m 4f 11y still promises strong competition. Accurate jumping and race positioning are likely to be key factors as the mares compete around Ludlow’s tight turns and demanding fences.

The meeting concludes at 5:10 pm with The Heartsease Farm Handicap Hurdle Race (Class 5). Eight runners will line up for the £7,500 finale over 2m 5f 55y, bringing the afternoon to a close with another stamina test. The concluding handicap hurdle is expected to provide an exciting finish to a varied and competitive Sunday card.

With valuable prize money, competitive fields and a balanced mix of hurdle and chase contests, Sunday’s meeting at Ludlow promises quality National Hunt action from start to finish.
