Finding Her Passion with Woodbine Champion Horses

The quiet thrill of the Woodbine backstretch is a world away from the glare of Hollywood lights, yet for Lisa Knight, the transition felt almost predestined. As she leaned over a stall to brush down a sleek chestnut, a soft smile crossed her face — the kind of smile that comes from knowing you are exactly where you belong.

“I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life in a cubicle staring at a computer,” Knight recalls, reflecting on her years in the film and television industry. Despite a well-paying career, she felt a persistent unease, a sense that her work lacked joy. “I had an inkling that I might like to work with horses. I had never been around them, but it just seemed like it would be cool.”

From Hotwalker to Groom of Woodbine Champion Horses

Her leap into Thoroughbred racing was as unexpected as it was serendipitous. A casual conversation with a friend led to a job on the Woodbine backstretch under longtime trainer John MacKenzie. “I started out like everyone else,” she says, “as a hotwalker. I couldn’t even spell horse back then. John taught me from the ground up, and I was hooked.”

A Family Legacy Among Woodbine Champion Horses

Knight’s journey took an even more astonishing turn years later when she reconnected with her biological family — both sides of which were deeply entrenched in racing. “It was a bit of a surprise to find out the thing I came to was the thing I came from,” she says. The revelation felt less like fate and more like a homecoming, cementing her devotion to the horses that had captured her heart.

Building Bonds with Every Woodbine Champion Horse

Her reputation in the barn speaks for itself. Whether caring for graded stakes winners like Cruden Bay or mentoring the quieter underdogs, Knight’s approach is grounded in patience and connection. “I always try to go the extra mile with horses,” she explains. “Sometimes these horses just need a friend, and I always try to be that for them.”

Recognition from Trainers of Woodbine Champion Horses

Trainers notice. MacRae, a multiple graded stakes-winning trainer, praises Knight’s dedication. “Lisa flat-out cares. She comes in with a positive mood every day and wants to make the team around her better. Her horses know her, and even other horses in the barn recognize her presence.”

Living Her Hollywood Story Among Woodbine Champion Horses

Currently working with veterinarian Candace Allen and maintaining ties with the MacRae barn, Knight’s story is a reminder that passion and perseverance can lead to extraordinary destinations. From the bright lights of media studios to the rhythmic clatter of hooves on Woodbine’s shedrow, she has found a calling that feels utterly natural  and profoundly fulfilling.
