Kevin Doyle’s accomplished gelding Layabout is set to make his long-awaited return when he heads the field for Saturday’s $100,000 Soldier’s Dancer Handicap at Gulfstream Park, marking the start of what connections hope will be a productive second half of the campaign.

Gulfstream Park Soldier’s Dancer Handicap

The Grade 3-winning four-year-old has not raced since finishing fourth in the Mac Diarmida Stakes (G2) on 28 February, where he set the pace before being caught late over 1 3/8 miles on the turf. Trainer Patrick Biancone believes the freshening has left the talented gelding in the right condition for another busy season.

Layabout returns in the Gulfstream Park Soldier’s Dancer Handicap, a $100,000 turf contest over 1 1/16 miles for horses aged three and older. The race forms the opening stakes feature on Gulfstream Park’s Independence Day programme, ahead of the Smile Sprint, while the first of 11 races is scheduled for 12:20 p.m.

Biancone explained that the decision to give Layabout an extended break was made with the bigger picture in mind.

The trainer said the gelding had enjoyed a demanding campaign and simply needed time to recover before returning for another series of major assignments. He added that Layabout had not been quite at his usual level in his latest appearance, making a break the sensible option.

The stable has mapped out ambitious targets for the months ahead, with the Arlington Million, a return to Kentucky Downs, and a possible appearance at the Breeders’ Cup all under consideration if the season unfolds as planned.

Layabout enjoyed an outstanding 2025 campaign, winning four of his nine starts. His victories included the Bear’s Den Stakes, Tropical Park Derby, and he opened 2026 with an impressive front-running success in the William L. McKnight Stakes (G3) over 1½ miles at Gulfstream Park.

One of the gelding’s notable strengths has been his versatility. Whether racing over a mile or staying trips, he has consistently produced high-quality performances on turf and Tapeta since joining Biancone’s stable.

His comeback was initially expected earlier in the spring, but plans changed after he developed a fever before a scheduled trip to Maryland. A subsequent illness delayed his preparations further, although three recent half-mile workouts at Palm Meadows have satisfied connections that he is ready to return.

Keith Asmussen has been booked to ride Layabout from stall six in the field of eight, where he will carry the top weight of 125 pounds.

Biancone will also be represented by I Know I Know, the Florida-bred four-year-old he co-owns with Amy Dunne. Third in last year’s running, the gelding made his seasonal return with a respectable fourth-place finish in an optional claimer on 12 June and is expected to line up here instead of Friday’s Wildcat Red overnight handicap.

The Gulfstream Park Soldier’s Dancer Handicap has attracted several other accomplished runners.

Among the leading challengers is Missed the Cut, a multiple graded stakes winner now trained by Bobby Dibona. The seven-year-old arrives after finishing second in the Mr. Steele Stakes following a slow start and brings the strongest career earnings into the race.

Recent winners Gran Oriente, Tomasello, Nemo, and Indecisiveness also add depth to the contest, while multiple stakes scorer Tank completes a competitive field.

Saturday’s renewal continues the legacy of Soldier’s Dancer, the accomplished Florida-bred who won 12 of his 33 career starts between 2006 and 2010, earning more than $1.5 million and capturing ten stakes races during his distinguished career.

With a proven record at Gulfstream Park and bigger targets on the horizon, Layabout will be aiming to make a successful return and re-establish himself among the leading turf performers of the season.
