A standout result highlighted the latest Inglis Digital June (Early) Online Sale as young broodmare La Mexicana, carrying a foal by champion sire Too Darn Hot, became the highest-priced horse sold through the platform this year.

Offered by Peter O’Brien Bloodstock on behalf of the Surace family, the mare was secured by a partnership between Blue Gum Farm and Suman Hedge Bloodstock after spirited competition.

The result marked a memorable milestone for Peter O’Brien, who recently launched his own bloodstock venture ahead of his departure from Segenhoe Stud following its sale to Yulong.

Speaking after the auction, O’Brien described the outcome as exceptional and paid tribute to the Surace family for entrusting him with the mare as one of the first major offerings under his new banner.

La Mexicana has built a strong reputation as a broodmare prospect, with her first three foals earning favourable assessments and her current weanling regarded as particularly promising. Combined with her pregnancy to Too Darn Hot, one of the world’s most sought-after young stallions, the package proved highly attractive to buyers.

The successful purchasers had been tracking the mare closely from the moment she was entered in the catalogue. Bloodstock agent Suman Hedge said discussions with O’Brien reinforced their confidence in pursuing the mare, whose profile aligned with both long-term breeding ambitions and commercial appeal.

Hedge noted that valuing the mare was not straightforward, given that much of her upside remains tied to future progeny and her current pregnancy. Nevertheless, the buying partnership remained determined to secure her and expressed delight at the outcome.

The La Mexicana sale became the headline result of a strong session that generated several six-figure transactions.

Second on the list was broodmare Pacific Dragon, offered by Tyreel Stud. In foal to Maurice, she realised $255,000 when purchased by Guy Mulcaster Bloodstock.

Mulcaster indicated the mare is expected to visit promising young stallion Wodeton during the upcoming breeding season. He spoke highly of Wodeton’s talent during his racing career and expressed confidence in the stallion’s future prospects.

Tyreel Stud’s Linda Monds welcomed the result, describing Pacific Dragon as a quality young mare whose future remains bright with her new ownership team. She added that the mare’s first two foals had shown encouraging signs, making the sale rewarding for both vendor and purchaser.

Another notable transaction involved three-year-old Defendant, a son of Justify, who was sold for $200,000 to Hong Kong-based Pure Bloodstock.

The purchaser confirmed plans for Defendant to travel to Hong Kong in August, where he is expected to be aimed at the prestigious Four-Year-Old Series next season. Connections believe the gelding possesses the profile and attributes well suited to racing in the region.

The sale once again highlighted the growing international reach of Inglis Digital, which has become a significant source of horses for overseas buyers, particularly in Hong Kong. Numerous winners in the jurisdiction this season have originated from the platform, reinforcing its standing within the global bloodstock market.

Additional six-figure results included Karavali at $200,000, White Thyme at $170,000, Coriolis at $170,000 and Junebug at $115,000.
