Christian Kukuk and Checker 47 Strike Gold in Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of London 2025
In front of a packed Royal Hospital Chelsea and a sell-out crowd, Christian Kukuk delivered one of the finest performances of his career to capture the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of London 2025 with the remarkable Checker 47. The win marks the German rider’s first LGCT Grand Prix triumph since Riyadh’s Super Grand Prix last season — and comes after finishing second in London just a year ago.
The historic venue in the heart of London provided an idyllic British summer backdrop, with the grandstands overflowing and the energy palpable from start to finish. Spectators were treated to world-class show jumping, thrilling competition, and a podium that showcased the best in the sport.
Ben Maher Lights Up the Jump-Off
Two-time LGCT London winner Ben Maher and his ultra-consistent partner Point Break were early starters in the jump-off. Riding with trademark precision and determination, Maher slashed an astonishing 5.3 seconds off the leading time at the stage, igniting the crowd’s excitement. His blistering pace held until the final moments of the class, ultimately securing second place in 40.79 seconds.
Speaking after the round, Maher expressed pride in his mount:
“Proud, really proud of him — he’s incredible. We’ve been close many times now and one day we’ll win one of these for him. Riding here at home with my family in the stands means a lot.”
Niels Bruynseels Makes a Statement
In only their third show together, Belgium’s Niels Bruynseels and the 12-year-old stallion Chacco’s Lando OL delivered a stellar double clear in 46.49 seconds to claim third place. It was their debut LGCT appearance as a combination, and the result has instantly made them ones to watch.
Bruynseels admitted he hadn’t planned to enter the Grand Prix with his new partner, but the gamble paid off:
“It wasn’t even certain I’d jump him today, but in the end it turned out to be the best plan.”
Checker 47 Delivers in Style
For Kukuk and Checker 47, the jump-off was a high-speed masterclass. Attacking each fence with pinpoint accuracy, the pair flew to the final oxer and crossed the timers in an unbeatable 40.41 seconds. The victory not only handed them the London title but also booked their golden ticket to the LGCT Super Grand Prix in Prague.
“It’s unbelievable,” said Kukuk. “To win here, after coming so close last year, is really special.”
Championship Standings Heat Up
Despite exiting early in London, Gilles Thomas retains his championship lead with 206 points. Simon Delestre sits second on 158.2, followed by Andreas Schou (140), Maikel van der Vleuten (131.67), and Kukuk now surging into fifth on 130 — setting up an electrifying final stretch of the season.
Next Stop: Valkenswaard
London once again cemented its place as a crown jewel of the LGCT calendar, blending top-tier sport with an electric atmosphere. With Valkenswaard hosting the next leg from 22–24 August 2025, the title race is set to intensify.
