Tony Cruz will send Beauty Waves into unfamiliar territory on Sunday as the six-year-old prepares to take on the G3 Korea Sprint over 1200 metres on sand at Seoul, with the Hong Kong-trained runner carrying the hopes of becoming the jurisdiction’s third winner of the race.
Korea Sprint 2026 will give Beauty Waves his first competitive outing in South Korea, but the trip has been built around a horse whose preparation has provided Cruz with plenty of encouragement.
Beauty Waves travelled to Seoul on August 25 alongside Hong Kong-trained rivals Self Improvement and Gorgeous Win. Cruz, who has handled major overseas assignments in Japan and Dubai, has been pleased with how smoothly the chestnut has settled into the journey and the change of surroundings.
The trainer has also been encouraged by the horse’s condition. Rather than dropping weight during the trip, Beauty Waves has maintained his physique, while his final Hong Kong trial offered further evidence that he is ready for the assignment.
Before leaving for South Korea, Beauty Waves completed a 1050-metre dirt trial at Sha Tin in 1 minute 3.21 seconds under Jerry Chau. The sectional breakdown was 17.1, 23 and 23.1 seconds.
Chau will retain the ride in Seoul as the jockey looks to follow up on his success aboard Self Improvement in last year’s Korea Sprint.
Beauty Waves will start from gate 13, with Self Improvement drawn nine and Gorgeous Win in 16.
His limited race experience on dirt is perhaps the biggest question surrounding the challenge. Beauty Waves has raced just once on the surface in Hong Kong, finishing third, but his training record provides a more encouraging picture. Since arriving from Ireland in early 2023, he has won 15 dirt barrier trials at Sha Tin and Conghua.
That record gives Cruz reason to believe the switch in surface will not prove an obstacle. Beauty Waves has also won on Polytrack in Ireland, while his previous racing experience on left-handed tracks should be another useful asset at Seoul.
The gelding is scheduled to gallop on Thursday as part of his final preparation, giving him another opportunity to become familiar with the Korean surface and surroundings before race day.
The Korea Sprint has developed a strong international flavour since its introduction in 2016. Japan has collected four victories, while South Korea and Hong Kong have each won the race twice. Japan will be represented this year by Dragon Welds and American Stage.
Beauty Waves therefore faces a field that includes proven regional opposition, with the Japanese runners expected to provide a particularly strong test.
For Hong Kong, the race carries added significance. Super Jockey became the first Hong Kong-trained winner in 2016, before Self Improvement added a second success last year. Beauty Waves now has the opportunity to join them in the roll of honour.
The G3 Korea Sprint will be simulcast in Hong Kong on Sunday, September 6, with the 1200-metre contest scheduled for 3.20pm Hong Kong time, which is 12.50pm in India.
With Beauty Waves already showing encouraging signs in his preparation, the Seoul assignment will provide a clear measure of how his dirt ability translates when the real test arrives.
