Trainer Katsunori Arayama planted a celebratory kiss on his veteran gelding Diktaean after the seven-year-old stormed through late to win the Korea Cup 2025 at Seoul Racecourse. Jockey Takayuki Yano stood tall in the irons, saluting the crowd as the Japanese raider’s powerful finish sealed a half-length triumph over Chancheng Glory in front of a roaring Sunday audience.

A Breakthrough for Diktaean

For connections, the victory was as emotional as it was historic. By landing the $1.1 million Group 3, Diktaean not only earned his tenth career success but also secured an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Del Mar. It was his first Group-level triumph, achieved in wet conditions that demanded both grit and class.

Drawn in post seven, Diktaean settled mid-pack while Great Winner and Chancheng Glory dictated early fractions. The highly fancied Ramjet loomed at the turn, but once Yano angled his mount into the clear, Diktaean lengthened stride and reeled in the leaders inside the final 50 metres. The stopwatch stopped at 1:50.8 for the nine furlongs, and with it came a golden ticket to the world stage on October 31.

Self Improvement Strikes in Korea Sprint

The undercard produced its own upset as Self Improvement, a six-year-old Deep Field gelding, edged out Japanese sprinter Chikappa to capture the Korea Sprint (G3). Sent off at 16-1, the Hong Kong-trained runner pressed Super Finish through the early stages before duelling stride-for-stride with the odds-on favourite. In the dying metres, Self Improvement thrust his head in front to prevail by half a length, covering the six furlongs in 1:10.5.

The win was especially sweet for owner Chung Yin Won, whose gelding rebounded sharply from an unplaced run in Hong Kong. It also carried high stakes: a guaranteed start in the $2 million Cygames Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Del Mar.

Eyes on Del Mar

Both victories formed part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, which awards “Win and You’re In” berths to major races across 15 countries. Breeders’ Cup will cover entry fees and provide travel support for Diktaean and Self Improvement, ensuring their connections can now dream of glory on American soil.

With October’s World Championships fast approaching, Seoul’s international meeting once again underscored its growing global significance. For the jubilant winning teams, the journey from South Korea now leads directly to the blue Pacific coast of California.
