The opening race of the Calcutta Races Summer Meeting – First Day on Thursday, 5 March 2026 began with a sharp sprint as Swift Lady powered home to win Race 1 – The Diabolical Handicap, a Class V contest for horses rated 1–26 over 1200 metres, run at 02:30 PM. Guided confidently by jockey Suraj Narredu, the Rutherford Alford-trained filly delivered a determined performance to give owners Mrs G Alford, Mr Pawan Choumal, Mr P Arvinth and Mr Rutherford Alford a successful start to the afternoon at Kolkata.
The Kolkata race result 5 March opened with plenty of early pace as the field broke smartly for the six-furlong dash. Swift Lady settled comfortably within striking distance before Narredu gradually angled her into contention approaching the home straight. Once asked for an effort, she quickened decisively, asserting her authority in the final furlong to secure the first winner of the meeting with a composed and professional display.
Dubai Prince, ridden by Darshan N for trainer Shafiq Khan, finished a respectable second after attempting to challenge the winner in the closing stages. Horus The Great, partnered by Gaurav Singh and trained by B Rajender Reddy, stayed on gamely to take third place as the trio completed the frame in the opening contest.
With the curtain-raiser decided, attention now shifts quickly to the The Toroloco Handicap, scheduled for 03:00 PM, as the Kolkata card continues to build momentum on the opening day of the Summer Meeting.
