The sprinting spotlight shone brightly in Race 5, The Calcutta Champions’ Sprint Trophy (Grade III), a 1200-metre contest for four-year-old horses and over, run at 03:30 PM on Saturday, 17th January 2026, during the Calcutta Races Winter Meeting. In a performance that will headline the Kolkata race result 17 January updates, Black Eagle stamped his authority with a decisive victory, expertly piloted by Vishal N Bunde for trainer B. Rajender Reddy, and racing in the colours of Mr Faiz Adam.

Breaking sharply and travelling with purpose through the early exchanges, Black Eagle was always positioned to strike. Vishal N Bunde judged the fractions astutely, allowing his mount to settle before asking for a decisive move entering the final furlong. Once produced, Black Eagle responded with a telling burst of speed, asserting clear control and maintaining his advantage to the line in authoritative sprinting fashion.

Meropi finished a credible second under P. Trevor for trainer Aashay Doctor, keeping the winner honest through the run-in but unable to bridge the decisive gap late on. Pluto, partnered by Hindu Singh and trained by Deepesh Narredu, stayed on resolutely to secure third place.

With the Calcutta Champions’ Sprint Trophy decided, attention now turns swiftly to the next contest on the card, The Lt Gen Jameel Mahmood Memorial Cup Division I, scheduled for 04:00 PM, as the Winter Meeting continues to build momentum.
