Toronto had a clear star on Saturday as Luster turned the 167th King’s Plate into a one-sided procession, pulling away decisively in the straight to secure a 7¼-length victory at Woodbine Racetrack.
King’s Plate 2026
Ridden with patience by Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez and trained by Josie Carroll, Luster settled in fourth early before being produced at the right moment. Once straightened for home, the three-year-old filly quickly separated from the field and continued to extend her advantage.
The winning time was 2:02.01 for the 1¼-mile contest, only a little outside the track record of 2:01.48 established by Moira in the 2022 running.
The early pace was set by Fire and Wine, who led through the opening stages with Very Special close behind. Luster travelled comfortably in the chasing group, with Dixie Law also positioned prominently.
Fire and Wine reached the half-mile in 46.48 seconds, but the complexion of the race changed approaching the final turn. Velazquez gradually moved Luster into contention before asking for her effort as the field straightened for home.
The response was immediate.
Luster surged clear and had opened a two-length advantage at the stretch call. From there, the race was effectively decided as she powered further away from the opposition.
Military Time finished second, three lengths ahead of Fire and Wine, while Dixie Law completed the first four.
The margin underlined just how authoritative the performance was. Luster had already established herself as one of the leading three-year-olds at Woodbine with a 5½-length success in the Woodbine Oaks on July 19, and she carried that form into the Canadian classic.
The result also gave Carroll a fourth King’s Plate victory. Her previous successes came with Edenwold in 2006, Inglorious in 2011 and Mighty Heart in 2020. She became the first woman to win the race when Edenwold provided her with that breakthrough success two decades ago.
For Velazquez, the victory was a second King’s Plate triumph. His first came in 2018 aboard Wonder Gadot, another filly who defeated the colts in the historic Canadian contest.
Luster also became the 40th filly to win the race, adding another notable chapter to the long history of female runners succeeding against their male counterparts.
The victory caps an impressive campaign for Luster, who has now recorded five wins from six starts. Her season also includes a Grade 3 success in the Selene Stakes before her dominant Woodbine Oaks performance.
Bred in Ontario by Ravi Sugrim and Joannie Dass, Luster is by Knicks Go out of Ruby Frost, a mare by The Factor. Her progression through the season has been marked by increasingly authoritative performances, with the King’s Plate providing the most significant result of the campaign so far.
King’s Plate 2026 also marked another important milestone for Carroll, whose long association with major Canadian races continues to produce results on the biggest stage.
The Canadian Triple Crown will now move to Fort Erie for the Prince of Wales Stakes on September 7, before returning to Woodbine for the Breeders’ Stakes on September 27.
For Luster, however, the immediate achievement is already substantial. A race with more than a century and a half of history has added another filly to its roll of honour, while Carroll and Velazquez have strengthened their own place in the event’s record books.
The season will continue with Turf Champions Day on September 12, featuring four Grade 1 contests: the Woodbine Mile, Johnnie Walker Natalma Stakes, E.P. Taylor Stakes and Summer Stakes. The meeting will form another major fixture on the Woodbine calendar before the Canadian Triple Crown reaches its conclusion later in September.
Regular racing at Woodbine is scheduled to continue through December 13, with meetings on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
For now, though, the focus remains on Luster. Her commanding King’s Plate performance has established the three-year-old as one of the standout stories of the Canadian racing season.
