Karl Burke’s extraordinary 8-year-old, Royal Champion (IRE), soared to a commanding victory in the Group 1 USD $3 million Neom Turf Cup, marking a highlight of the King Abdulaziz race result 14 February. The triumph carried extra emotion as it continued the success of his late owner-breeder, Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum.

From the start, Japanese filly Yamanin Bouclier (JPN) dashed forward to set the pace, while Royal Champion was held comfortably in fourth under the calm guidance of Oisin Murphy. Approaching the 600-metre marker, Murphy angled the son of Shamardal wide to find a clear path, unleashing a breathtaking turn of foot. By the final 200 metres, Royal Champion had pulled decisively ahead, winning by four and three-quarter lengths in a time of 2:06.221, capping a memorable day in the King Abdulaziz race result 14 February.

The victory followed his previous Group 2 success in the Bahrain International Trophy last November, confirming Royal Champion as a rising star among British-trained stayers. Second place went to Facteur Cheval (IRE) under Mickael Barzalona, with Survie (IRE), ridden by Ryan Moore, finishing strongly in third.

Karl Burke reflected on the win with pride: “It was superb. He’s a forward-going horse, keen at home, but once he gets cover he travels beautifully. Oisin executed a perfect ride. He’s a horse with a turn of foot who keeps galloping and stays the trip really well. We’ll discuss options for Dubai Turf, but a lot will depend on Sheikh Mohammed Obaid’s family. Our thoughts are with them.”

Oisin Murphy added: “He was amazing. Karl had the horse perfectly prepared — it was push-button. This is a big race, and I’m glad his horses continue to carry on Sheikh Mohammed Obaid’s legacy.”

Mickael Barzalona praised Facteur Cheval: “He’s mostly run over a mile, but he showed his speed today and performed brilliantly. A mature, intelligent horse who knows his job.”

Ryan Moore on Survie: “She ran very well. I’m getting to know her and she showed real promise today.”

Royal Champion’s emphatic performance in the Neom Turf Cup 2026, as part of the King Abdulaziz race result 14 February, cements his reputation as a top-level contender, with both emotional and sporting significance for his connections.
