For many racing enthusiasts, American raider Reef Runner (USA) had flown under the radar ahead of the Group 2 USD$2m Turf Sprint Presented by Qiddiya City. In the King Abdulaziz Race result 14 February, however, the 5-year-old showed he was perfectly suited to both the trip and the track, making an instant impression in his Saudi Arabian debut.

Breaking sharply from the 10 gate, Reef Runner, partnered by Irad Ortiz Jr, immediately settled behind the Japanese leader Shin Forever (USA), with French contender Lazzat (FR) tracking on the outside. As the field entered the final straight, Lazzat, guided by James Doyle, surged into the lead. But Reef Runner, always in striking range, launched a powerful late run to snatch victory by a neck in a time of 1:18.238. Commanche Brave (IRE), trained by Donnacha O’Brien, held on for third, three-quarters of a length behind the leading duo.

This triumph marked the first Saudi start for trainer David Fawkes and owner/breeders Alex and JoAnn Lieblong, making the victory all the more special in the King Abdulaziz Race result 14 February.

Irad Ortiz Jr, jockey of Reef Runner, said: “We broke from the 10-hole, and knowing he’s run five furlongs before, I was confident we’d get a good position without using too much early. The horse broke excellently and settled perfectly behind the Japanese horse. Turning for home, I asked him, and he gave me a strong kick—just like he always does.”

Trainer David Fawkes added: “Irad did a brilliant job positioning him. The horse trained excellently, and everything came together perfectly. Beating a top French horse in our first Saudi run is very rewarding. We might consider Dubai next if we get an invitation.”

Meanwhile, James Doyle, rider of Lazzat, reflected: “Disappointed to be beaten, of course. He’s a horse we love, but drawing the 12 stall was a disadvantage for a speed horse. Still, it was a close finish.”

The King Abdulaziz Race result 14 February came alive with excitement, showcasing international talent and thrilling finishes. Reef Runner’s victory not only highlighted the prowess of American sprinters but also underscored the growing appeal of Saudi racing on the global stage.
