Keagan de Melo enjoyed a memorable breakthrough at Sha Tin on Sunday, securing his biggest win in Hong Kong with a determined ride aboard Copartner Prance in the Group 3 Premier Cup Handicap. Despite being sent off at odds of 25/1, the South African jockey delivered a front-running masterclass to guide the Francis Lui-trained gelding to victory in the HK$4.2 million contest over 1400 metres.

Jumping swiftly from gate five in a field of nine, Copartner Prance dictated terms early, fending off pressure from Victor The Winner, who stalked the leader throughout. In the closing stages, Happy Together launched a fierce challenge, reducing the margin to just a head, but Copartner Prance held on with grit to claim the honours in a time of 1 minute 21.15 seconds.

The performance also highlighted trainer Francis Lui’s depth of talent, as his runners dominated the finish. Stablemates Packing Hermod and Patch Of Theta finished third and fourth respectively, showcasing Lui’s impressive hand in the Premier Cup.

For De Melo, the win carried added significance. A Group 1-winning rider back home in South Africa, he admitted the results hadn’t always reflected his efforts since moving to Hong Kong. However, his perseverance paid off with this Group 3 success—his first at this level in the city—bringing his season tally to 12 wins.

Speaking after the race, De Melo credited Lui for the straightforward race instructions, which allowed him to control the tempo and ride confidently. He also acknowledged the unwavering support of trainers in Hong Kong, expressing gratitude for the faith shown in him despite recent challenges.

Copartner Prance, racing in the colours of the Copartner Spirit Syndicate, continues to prove a formidable competitor. Sunday’s triumph marked his eighth win in Hong Kong and boosted his career earnings to nearly HK$15 million. The son of Epaulette previously made headlines with six consecutive wins last season, underlining his consistency at the top level.

Trainer Francis Lui, celebrated for guiding champions like Golden Sixty, was full of praise for both horse and rider. Reflecting on Copartner Prance’s development, Lui noted the gelding’s improved ability to settle during races, which proved decisive over the 1400-metre trip.

As the curtain fell on a thrilling Premier Cup, the Hong Kong racing scene now shifts to Happy Valley for the next meeting on Wednesday, 25 June, promising more top-class action for fans and connections alike.
