At 86, veteran trainer Jimmy Toner remains focused on the same pursuit that has defined his remarkable career — preparing horses to perform at their best. On Sunday at Gulfstream Park, his longtime trainee Siege of Boston will attempt to provide the Hall of Fame conditioner with a milestone 900th career victory in the $70,000 Empire Builder overnight handicap.
Jimmy Toner Career Wins Milestone
The one-mile turf contest has added significance for Toner, whose career has stretched across nearly seven decades and produced some of the most memorable names in American racing. Siege of Boston, a 7-year-old homebred owned by Joseph Allen, will take on six rivals as Toner looks to reach a landmark achievement.
Siege of Boston enters the race after an impressive return to form on May 30, when he produced a strong late run to win a 1 1/16-mile turf event at Laurel Park by 3¼ lengths. The son of War Front has recorded five victories from 29 previous starts, with 18 finishes in the top three and career earnings of $603,171.
Toner took charge of Siege of Boston’s training before the horse’s 3-year-old season in 2022. Since then, the gelding has developed into a reliable performer on turf, including notable efforts at Gulfstream Park where he won an allowance event and placed second in the Grade 3 Canadian Turf before finishing fourth in the Grade 2 Fort Lauderdale.
The veteran trainer believes the mile distance may be slightly shorter than ideal for Siege of Boston, but sees Sunday’s race as an important step in the horse’s summer campaign.
Siege of Boston has already made 15 stakes appearances, collecting three Grade 3 placings while consistently competing against quality opposition. His recent preparation has included four workouts at Palm Meadows, Gulfstream’s satellite training facility, as he returns to South Florida competition.
Toner reached career victory No. 899 on July 5 when Time of Rivals won Gulfstream’s opening race. A victory from Siege of Boston would add another historic chapter to a training career that has included 54 graded-stakes victories, including 15 at Grade 1 level, and more than $36.5 million in prize earnings.
Throughout his career, Toner has become particularly respected for his achievements with turf fillies. His successes include champions such as Soaring Softly, winner of the 1999 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, along with standout performers Memories of Silver, Wonder Again, Winter Memories and Time and Motion.
The Empire Builder field also includes several experienced turf performers. Arindel’s Tank, trained by his connections after multiple strong Gulfstream efforts, enters after finishing sixth in the Soldier’s Dancer Stakes. BC Racing’s Prevent brings a strong record on Gulfstream’s Tapeta surface, while Missed the Cut arrives with previous Grade 3 success and recent competitive efforts at the track.
Private Thoughts, who has recorded nine career victories, adds further depth to the field after a recent front-running success. Completing the lineup are Indecisiveness and I Know I Know, creating a balanced group of runners for Sunday’s contest.
For Toner, the milestone represents more than just a number. It reflects decades of dedication, patience and the ability to develop horses at the highest level of the sport. With Siege of Boston ready to return to action, the veteran trainer will have another opportunity to add to one of racing’s most enduring careers.
