Jasmina prepares for the 33rd Generous Portion Stakes 2025 at Del Mar

Trainer Doug O’Neill leaned on the rail Monday morning, arms folded and gaze fixed, as Reddam Racing’s homebred filly Jasmina strutted onto the Del Mar dirt, her ears pricked and stride confident. After the drama of the CTBA Stakes earlier this month — where she was narrowly beaten but later promoted to victory following a disqualification — the flashy chestnut has quickly become the filly everyone will be watching in today’s Generous Portion Stakes.

This marks the 33rd edition of the Generous Portion Stakes, headlining Del Mar’s Labor Day racing card, and anticipation is running high. Nine precocious 2-year-old California-bred fillies will face off over five and one-half furlongs in a $100,000 showdown that serves as Race 10 on an 11-race afternoon program. The feature is part of the 2025 Golden State Series, a collection of 31 races worth $3.825 million exclusively for state-bred runners.

Redemption on the Line for CTBA Rivals

The narrative heading into this year’s Generous Portion Stakes circles back to the CTBA Stakes on August 3, where the first four past the post are back for another battle. That race was nothing short of chaotic — a tightly packed dash that saw My Love Caroline cross the line first, only to be disqualified and placed fourth after interference in the stretch.

The decision elevated Jasmina to victory, earning her a confidence-boosting result despite being beaten only a nose. Right behind her that day were Tapatia Mia, who finished third but was bumped up to second, and Liberation, promoted from fourth to third. All three fillies are back, seeking to settle unfinished business under cleaner racing conditions.

Here’s a look at the nine confirmed runners in post position order, with jockeys:

  • Tapatia Mia (Ruben Silvera)

  • Mohaven (Hector I. Berrios)

  • What’s a Good Name (Juan Hernandez)

  • Jasmina (Kyle Frey)

  • My Kat (Diego Herrera)

  • Too Sassy (Umberto Rispoli)

  • Cara Rose (David Cohen)

  • Liberation (Antonio Fresu)

  • Lino’s Angel (Tyler Baze)

With speed-drawn wide in Too Sassy and Cara Rose, and stalking types like Jasmina and Tapatia Mia perfectly poised for a tactical run, the stage is set for a thrilling stretch drive.

A Stakes-Packed Labor Day Card

While the Generous Portion Stakes takes center stage, Del Mar has stacked its Labor Day schedule with quality racing. Racegoers will also be treated to the $100,000 Tranquility Lake Stakes — a one-mile contest on the main track for fillies and mares — slated as Race 8 on the card.

The first post for today’s Labor Day program is 1:30 p.m., with a lively crowd expected as Del Mar’s summer season builds toward its final weeks.
