The Hyderabad Race Club dates back to 1868 during the period of the Nizams, who initiated organised horse races. The early races used to take place at the Moula Ali Racecourse and were called the “Hyderabad (Deccan) Races.” These were regarded as the equal of the racing facilities in the other parts of India.
In 1886, the sixth Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Mahboob Ali Khan, relocated the races to Malakpet because it was closer to his own place, and the sport was continued by royal sponsorship there.
Eventually, land was secured for the current race track in Malakpet from the Nizam, and after the preparation of the race track, it started conducting races in 1968.
Over the course of time, Hyderabad Race Club emerged as a major authority in Indian racing and arranged important races like the Deccan Derby, President of India Gold Cup, and Nizam’s Gold Cup.
