James McDonald is optimistic about his chances of securing Group 1 triumphs with Romantic Warrior and Howdeepisyourlove at Meydan Racecourse on April 5. The Hong Kong-based contenders have drawn barrier nine in their respective races, setting the stage for a compelling challenge in Dubai. McDonald, crowned the LONGINES World’s Best Jockey, is eyeing an addition to his tally of 114 Group 1 victories.

Romantic Warrior is set to compete in the G1 Dubai Turf (1800m), while Howdeepisyourlove will take on elite sprinters in the G1 Al Quoz Sprint (1200m). McDonald also has a ride aboard Sword Point, who has drawn barrier two for the G2 Godolphin Mile (1600m) on dirt. The New Zealander remains confident in the form of Romantic Warrior, especially after his valiant effort in the G1 Saudi Cup (1800m) in February, where he finished second in a performance hailed as one of the finest of his career.

The seasoned jockey expressed pride in the horse’s effort and credited trainer Danny Shum and his team for their meticulous preparation. Romantic Warrior’s resilience was evident, having bounced back strongly from his Saudi Cup exertions. McDonald emphasized the horse’s ability to thrive in high-pressure situations, stating that he performs best in challenging races. Facing a tougher field than in his January run at Meydan, Romantic Warrior will need to deliver his peak performance once again.

Returning to Dubai for the first time since his record-breaking G1 Jebel Hatta (1800m) victory, Romantic Warrior will confront a competitive field of 10, including defending Dubai Turf champion Facteur Cheval, who has drawn barrier 11. McDonald is confident that if Romantic Warrior replicates his Jebel Hatta performance, he will be a formidable contender. The firm surface and long back straight are expected to suit him well, and his ability to adapt to different race scenarios adds to his strengths.

Trainer Danny Shum also expressed satisfaction with the barrier draw, noting that Romantic Warrior’s versatility allows him to adjust his racing strategy based on the pace of the race. If the tempo is fast, McDonald can settle him comfortably, whereas a slower race would allow him to position closer to the leaders.

McDonald is equally enthusiastic about Howdeepisyourlove’s chances in the Al Quoz Sprint. The consistent performer has repeatedly held his own against some of the world’s top sprinters, including Ka Ying Rising and Helios Express. Despite finishing behind them, his form remains strong, reinforcing McDonald’s belief in his competitiveness. He suggested that if Ka Ying Rising were in the field, he would be a clear favorite, which underscores the quality of Howdeepisyourlove’s previous performances.

The Dubai World Cup meeting, renowned for its electrifying atmosphere, will take place under warm conditions. Adjustments have been made to the schedule, with races beginning an hour later than usual. Sword Point will kick off the night’s engagements at 9:45 PM (HKT), followed by Howdeepisyourlove at 10:20 PM, and culminating with Romantic Warrior’s run at 12:15 AM (HKT) on April 6. With high stakes and elite competition, McDonald and his mounts are poised to make a significant impact on Dubai’s grand racing stage.
