The fight for Hong Kong’s trainers’ championship is set to resume in earnest at Sha Tin on Sunday after a brief pause during Royal Ascot, with the season’s closing weeks shaping up as a compelling battle among some of the jurisdiction’s leading conditioners.

Hong Kong trainers’ championship.

With just weeks remaining in the campaign, Caspar Fownes continues to lead the standings on 62 victories, maintaining a four-win advantage at the top. Danny Shum’s success with Forever Folks last weekend allowed him to move onto 58 wins, drawing level with Mark Newnham in a tightly packed contest that remains far from settled.

Further down the ladder, Francis Lui strengthened his position with a treble at Sha Tin to reach 54 wins, while David Hayes kept his hopes alive thanks to a double that lifted him to 52 victories. As the season approaches its climax, every winner carries increasing significance in the race for the coveted title.

Among those chasing the leader, Newnham has continued to exceed expectations. The Australian trainer has previously suggested his stable could eventually “run out of bullets”, yet he remains firmly in the hunt and still has several promising runners capable of adding valuable wins in the weeks ahead.

Two of those hopefuls will step out at Sha Tin this Sunday. Last-start winner Oldtown returns in the Class 4 Diamond Handicap over 1200 metres, remaining at the course and distance where he scored by half a length on 31 May. The trainer will also unveil exciting newcomer Hero Mastermind, who makes his debut in the Class 4 Ruby Handicap over 1000 metres after an eye-catching all-the-way barrier trial victory on the all-weather track.

Newnham’s hand is further strengthened by the presence of Crimson Flash, a five-time winner who is set to contest the Group 3 Premier Cup Handicap over 1400 metres.

The weeks ahead could prove crucial in the Hong Kong trainers’ championship battle. Newnham is expected to rely on several recent winners as he seeks to keep pace with Fownes and Shum.

One of the most intriguing members of his team is Joyful Joy, who produced a surprise but impressive debut success in late May. The progressive galloper is scheduled to remain in Class 4 company over 1400 metres when returning on 27 June.

Newnham is also targeting that meeting with Ace, who will attempt to build on a recent victory, while Armour War Eagle remains another potential contributor. The gelding returned to dirt racing with a strong second-place finish in April and was first reserve for last weekend’s Sand Martin Handicap. Connections are now aiming him at the 27 June fixture, where he could add further momentum to the stable’s premiership challenge.

Despite remaining within striking distance of the lead, Newnham has been realistic about the task ahead.

“I’m hanging in there but I’ve got a lot of young horses and a lot of new horses that won’t run this season. I’ll be trying with what I’ve got and if it happens, it happens, but I probably won’t have enough runners,” Newnham said.

Whether the numbers ultimately favour him or not, Newnham has ensured the Hong Kong trainers’ championship remains a genuine contest heading into the final month of the season, with every meeting likely to have a significant bearing on the outcome.
