The Hong Kong racing season has entered its crucial final phase, with the spotlight firmly fixed on the increasingly tense trainers’ championship as just 15 meetings remain before the campaign concludes on 15 July. The margins at the top have narrowed to a matter of single wins, setting up a compelling finish to a season defined by consistency, depth and fine tactical placement across stables.
Hong Kong trainers championship 2025/26
The Hong Kong trainers championship race 2025/26 has become a gripping contest with little separating the leading handlers as the season edges toward its conclusion.
At the summit, Danny Shum has edged into a slender lead after a productive campaign that has delivered 54 winners from 73 meetings. A timely treble at Happy Valley last week propelled him to the top, underlining both momentum and stability within his yard at a decisive stage of the season.
Hot on his heels is Caspar Fownes, sitting just one win behind on 53, while Mark Newnham (52) and Francis Lui (50) remain firmly in contention. David Hayes (48) and John Size (46) are also within striking distance, ensuring that six trainers remain mathematically and competitively in the hunt as the final stretch approaches.
For Shum, the season has been shaped not only by domestic success but also by stability within his operation. The presence of champion galloper Romantic Warrior has remained central to his year, though notably without overseas campaigns this term, allowing greater focus on his Hong Kong-based string.
“Because I haven’t needed to go overseas this year, I have been able to concentrate fully on my stable and my staff are all doing a good job,” Shum explained, highlighting the efficiency within both Sha Tin and Conghua.
The seasoned handler, who has already experienced global success with Romantic Warrior and Royal Ascot glory with Little Bridge, is clear about what a trainers’ title would represent.
“Of course (it would be my crowning achievement). Everyone wants to win a championship,” he said.
Despite the mounting pressure at the top, Shum remains measured in his approach, insisting that routine and process will remain unchanged in the closing weeks.
“I’m trying to operate as normally as possible – I won’t be doing anything crazy. I will just try my best and look after my horses,” he said, adding that his focus remains firmly on equine welfare and owner interests.
Form-wise, Shum’s stable continues to show encouraging signs, with five winners already recorded in May and positive results in recent trials at Conghua further strengthening confidence in his squad.
Looking ahead, he is set to field a strong team at Sha Tin this Sunday, featuring 11 runners, including Romantic Warrior and Romantic Thor in the Group 1 Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (2400m), alongside recent winners Packing King and Without Compare.
As the Hong Kong trainers championship race 2025/26 enters its decisive weeks, every runner, result and placement is likely to carry significant weight in what promises to be a finely balanced conclusion.
With the trainers’ championship entering its decisive phase, the slightest shift in momentum could prove pivotal in determining the outcome. The top six remain tightly packed, ensuring that every runner over the final meetings carries significant weight in the overall standings. Consistency, rather than isolated bursts of success, is expected to be the key factor as the season winds down. In such a closely fought contest, even minor setbacks or strong weekend hauls could dramatically alter the leaderboard, keeping the pressure firmly on all leading stables right through to the final race day.
