Hexham Racecourse staged an entertaining afternoon of summer jumps racing on Saturday, June 21, with competitive contests across hurdles and fences producing memorable performances from a number of talented runners. From Newport’s determined success in the opening contest to Stylish Recruit’s staying power in the finale, racegoers were treated to a showcase of quality jumping action under pleasant conditions in Northumberland.

The afternoon began with the L & R Pest Control Services Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle Race (Class 5) over two miles and 128 yards. The race produced an exciting finish as Newport, partnered by Tom Midgley, displayed plenty of determination to secure victory. Traveling strongly throughout the contest, Newport responded well to pressure in the closing stages and stayed on strongly after the final hurdle. The win rewarded a patient ride from Midgley and gave connections a well-deserved success in the day’s opening event.

The second race on the card, the Chris Lowther & Brian Ellison 28 Years Maiden Hurdle Race (Class 4) over two miles, four furlongs and 108 yards, saw Dolly Dior finally open her account over hurdles. Ridden confidently by Danny McMenamin, the mare settled comfortably before making her move approaching the final bend. Once asked for her effort, Dolly Dior quickened clear and jumped the final obstacles with assurance. The victory represented a significant milestone for both horse and connections, who have shown patience throughout her development.

Attention then turned to the Matfen Hall Hotel Handicap Steeple Chase (Class 3), a competitive contest run over one mile, seven furlongs and 213 yards. Conquer The Breeze (IRE) produced one of the performances of the afternoon under Ryan Mania. The Irish-bred runner traveled fluently throughout and jumped accurately at every fence. Taking command approaching the home straight, Conquer The Breeze maintained a strong gallop and comfortably held off the challengers. The victory highlighted the horse’s excellent form and reinforced his credentials as one of the more progressive performers in this grade.

The quality continued in the Jethro’s Cafe of Haltwhistle Handicap Hurdle Race (Class 3), where High Dancer delivered an impressive display. Another winner for Danny McMenamin, High Dancer showed both speed and stamina in equal measure. Positioned prominently from the outset, the gelding jumped neatly and gradually increased the pressure on his rivals. Once hitting the front after the final hurdle, High Dancer powered away to record a convincing success. The victory completed a notable double on the card for McMenamin and further enhanced his excellent record at Hexham.

The fifth race of the afternoon, the Tynedale Function Suite Handicap Steeple Chase (Class 4) over two miles and four furlongs, provided another competitive spectacle. Passengerontheship (IRE), ridden by Jonathan England, proved too strong for the opposition after a well-judged ride. England kept his mount in contention throughout before asking for maximum effort entering the final stages. Passengerontheship responded admirably, producing a strong finishing run and jumping the final fence cleanly before pulling clear. The success was a reward for consistency and showcased the horse’s effectiveness over intermediate distances.

As the shadows lengthened, attention switched to the concluding event, the Sun Racing Summer Jumps Championship Handicap Hurdle Race (Class 5) over nearly three miles. Staying power was always likely to be the decisive factor, and Stylish Recruit (IRE) rose to the challenge magnificently under Patrick Wadge.

Held up during the early stages, Stylish Recruit was produced with a perfectly timed challenge approaching the home turn. The gelding traveled strongly into contention and gradually wore down the leaders before asserting after the final hurdle. Showing admirable stamina on the long run-in, Stylish Recruit pulled clear to secure an impressive victory and bring the curtain down on a successful day’s racing.

The Hexham meeting once again demonstrated why summer jumps racing continues to attract enthusiastic support from racing fans. The course’s unique undulating layout tested both horses and jockeys throughout the afternoon, rewarding those able to combine tactical awareness with jumping accuracy.

Among the standout performers were Danny McMenamin, who enjoyed a notable riding double aboard Dolly Dior and High Dancer, while Ryan Mania’s polished ride on Conquer The Breeze also caught the eye. The victories for Newport, Passengerontheship and Stylish Recruit ensured that several different yards enjoyed success during a competitive and entertaining programme.
