Homebred chestnut He’s a Knockout delivered a determined front-running performance on Friday at Del Mar, making every stride count to secure victory in the Real Good Deal Stakes with Joel Rosario aboard.
The California-bred three-year-old broke sharply and controlled the seven-furlong contest from the outset, holding off a late challenge to prevail by a head in a closely fought finish. Trained by Carla Gaines, the colt covered the distance in 1:22.71 to earn the biggest victory of his young career.
He’s a Knockout won the Real Good Deal Stakes in a strong display of speed and resilience, marking another notable success for the Harris Farms breeding programme.
Bred by Harris Farms in Coalinga, the homebred son of Smiling Tiger carried the colours of a breeding operation founded by the late John Harris. The victory also added another chapter to the long association between Gaines and Harris Farms, with the trainer having worked with the operation for several decades.
The Real Good Deal Stakes, restricted to California-bred three-year-olds, carried a purse of $152,500, with the winner earning $85,500.
He’s a Knockout handled the transition to dirt racing with confidence after beginning his career with three starts on turf. His ability to break quickly and maintain his rhythm proved decisive as he faced a strong stretch challenge from Party Animal.
The winner’s closest pursuer was Bushman Thoroughbreds’ Party Animal, who finished second, one and a quarter lengths ahead of Richard Barton’s Ocean Bear, who completed the top three.
The race was the second of eight California-bred events scheduled during the Del Mar meeting.
He’s a Knockout Real Good Deal Stakes victory highlighted the colt’s natural speed and his ability to carry that pace over the seven-furlong distance.
The Real Good Deal Stakes success also provided further encouragement for a three-year-old who had shown promise but was seeking his first major breakthrough. His victory suggested he could remain an important contender among California-bred runners as the season progresses.
With Rosario guiding him through the race and Gaines overseeing his preparation, He’s a Knockout produced a performance built around early speed, composure and determination when challenged late.
