The stage is set today (February 23rd) at RWITC (Royal Western India Turf Club Ltd)’s iconic Mahalaxmi Racecourse in Mumbai for one of the most anticipated events of the racing season, The Poonawalla Breeders’ Multi-Million (Gr.1). Known as the richest juvenile race in the country, it features a competitive field of 16 three-year-old thoroughbreds, coincidentally making this year’s edition as wide open as the Indian Derby (Gr.1) held earlier this month.

Beyond the high-stakes action on the track, the day promises an unforgettable experience for attendees. Entry is free for ladies and children under 18, with the gates opening at 3:00 PM. Spectators can enjoy a vibrant flea market offering food, merchandise, and unique finds, with all entrants receiving a ₹200 food coupon to indulge in a variety of culinary delights. Adding to the entertainment are fashion contests, games, and activities designed to keep the atmosphere lively throughout the day. And for sports fans, large TV screens have been installed across the racecourse, ensuring that the crowd can catch the much-anticipated India-Pakistan cricket match without missing a moment of the racing action.

Now, let’s delve into the leading contenders who could make their presence felt in this prestigious race, GUNSMOKE, trained by Malesh Narredu and ridden by his son Yash Narredu, comes into this race after an impressive maiden win, followed by a strong performance where he finished second to PROKOFIEVwhile conceding 1kg. His sharp turn of foot and fighting spirit make him a serious contender.

PROKOFIEV, trained by Prasanna Kumar, announced his arrival at Mahalaxmi in style by displaying an electric burst of speed to reel in both SOVEREIGN KING and GUNSMOKE. Having remained in Mumbai since that run, his trackwork has reportedly been outstanding. With the experienced David Allan in the saddle, he is expected to put up another bold show.

SOVEREIGN KING, trained by Adhiraj Singh Jodha, is another strong contender. Jodha, enjoying a stellar season, has entrusted the ride once again to C.S. Jodha, who partnered the colt to an emphatic maiden victory before going down narrowly to PROKOFIEV. Also representing the same stable is ELUSIVE ART, to be ridden by Neeraj Rawal. The filly has been unbeaten in her two career starts over 1000m and 1200m, respectively. While the step up to 1400m could be a challenge, her raw ability and big heart cannot be underestimated.

Among other notable contenders is RED BISHOP, from the powerhouse yard of Pesi Shroff. Ridden by P Trevor, he caused a minor upset when storming past his highly regarded stablemate SUPERSTAR in a 1400m maiden. The only slight concern is that he is returning to the track within 14 days, but his talent is undeniable.

MAGNETAR, trained by Bangalore based Arvind Ganapathy, arrives with an unblemished record, having won both his starts in style. He will be partnered by Imran Chisty and is expected to be a strong force in this high-profile contest.

One filly that deserves mention despite still being a maiden is MIRACLE STAR. Trained by veteran conditioner S Padmanabhan and ridden by in-form jockey A Sandesh, she made a huge impression in the BK Ratonsey Million when she came from well off the pace to finish a flying second over 1200m. Given her late burst, the extra furlong here could work in her favor, making her an intriguing prospect.

With a full field of talented juveniles, the race promises to be a spectacle where anything can happen. In such a competitive lineup, tactics, positioning, and temperament on the day will play crucial roles in determining the winner.

Adding to the significance of the event, the organisers have named a race in honour of the late Prince Karim Aga Khan IV. Widely respected for his contributions to horse racing, The Aga Khan was a legendary breeder whose family has produced countless champions, leaving an indelible mark on the global racing landscape. The Prince Karim Aga Khan IV Memorial Trophy pays tribute to his enduring legacy, celebrating his passion for the sport.
