Gulfstream Park’s Sunshine Meet begins on Friday, September 4, with a nine-race programme and a stakes schedule carrying $1.925 million in total purses, led by the $225,000 Group Three Princess Rooney on September 12.
Gulfstream Park Sunshine Meet 2026
The autumn fixture serves as the lead-in to Gulfstream’s 2026-27 Championship Meet, which is scheduled to begin on Thanksgiving Day, November 26. Fourteen stakes are programmed through the Sunshine Meet, with $250,000 of the overall purse allocation coming from the Florida-Bred Incentive Fund.
The Princess Rooney, now in its 40th year, provides the principal attraction. The seven-furlong contest is open to fillies and mares aged three and older and will be staged on Saturday, September 12.
It also carries added significance as a qualifying event for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, which will be run over the same distance at Keeneland on October 31.
The September 12 programme also includes the $100,000 Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint over five furlongs for three-year-olds and older, along with the $100,000 Ginger Punch for fillies and mares over a mile on turf.
Joseph Chases 17th Consecutive Meet Title
Saffie Joseph Jr. enters the new Gulfstream Park Sunshine Meet 2026 attempting to extend an extraordinary sequence of local championships.
The trainer is seeking a 17th consecutive Gulfstream meet title and has four runners entered on the opening programme, including two newcomers.
Epic Ray, a two-year-old daughter of Epicenter, is set to make her debut in Race 6, while three-year-old Twirling Candy filly Daily Prayer is entered in Race 4.
Joseph’s recent record in the Princess Rooney is particularly notable. He became the first trainer to win three consecutive editions of the race when Haulin Ice scored in 2025.
Haulin Ice, a 12-time winner with earnings approaching $1.3 million, later finished sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. She is among six horses nominated by Joseph for this year’s Princess Rooney.
The previous two editions further underline the race’s importance on the wider sprinting calendar.
Soul of an Angel won the Princess Rooney in 2024 before going on to capture the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint and earning the Eclipse Award as champion female sprinter.
Three Witches had given Joseph the first success in his current Princess Rooney sequence in 2023 before later finishing third in the Breeders’ Cup event.
The Princess Rooney has regularly produced runners capable of competing at the highest level later in the season. Since 2009, 13 of its last 15 winners have subsequently contested the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.
Among them was Musical Romance, winner of the Princess Rooney in 2012. She had finished second in the race a year earlier before winning the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint later in 2011 and being crowned champion female sprinter.
Herrera Begins New Meet After Royal Palm Title
Jockey Diego Herrera also arrives at the Sunshine Meet with momentum after securing his first riding title at the recently concluded Royal Palm Meet.
The 22-year-old is named for 24 rides across the opening weekend, including seven on Friday.
Current Gulfstream standings underline the productive season Herrera has enjoyed, with the young rider among the track’s leading jockeys in victories and earnings.
Florida-Bred Juveniles Open Stakes Programme
The stakes action begins on Saturday, September 5, with two $150,000 contests for Florida-bred two-year-olds.
The Three Ring, for juvenile fillies, and the Express Tour, open to two-year-olds, will both be contested over seven furlongs on the main track.
Following the Princess Rooney weekend, the $100,000 Hollywood Beach is scheduled for September 26, offering two-year-olds a five-furlong turf assignment.
Florida-bred juveniles return to prominence on October 3 with two $250,000 races over a one-turn mile. The Awesome Feather is reserved for fillies, while the Three Rules is open to two-year-olds.
The Gulfstream Park Sunshine Meet 2026 then moves into its closing stages with a series of turf and juvenile events.
The October 30 programme features the $100,000 Cellars Shiraz for three-year-old fillies over a mile and a sixteenth and the $100,000 Our Dear Peggy for two-year-old fillies over a mile.
A day later, the $100,000 Armed Forces for two-year-olds and the $100,000 Showing Up for three-year-olds continue the turf stakes schedule.
The final stakes contests of the Sunshine Meet are both six-furlong races for juveniles on the main track. The $100,000 Juvenile Fillies Sprint is scheduled for November 7, followed by the $100,000 Juvenile Sprint on November 14.
With the Princess Rooney providing the centrepiece and several established Gulfstream figures beginning fresh campaigns, the Sunshine Meet provides an important bridge between the summer programme and the track’s Championship Meet later in the year.
