As the crowd erupted at Haydock on Saturday, Grey Dawning’s triumph in the £200,000 Chase was more than just a win — it was a moment of pure emotion. Trainer Dan Skelton could be seen embracing his team and planting a proud kiss on the horse’s muzzle, while jockey Harry Skelton raised a fist in quiet celebration after guiding the eight-year-old to a memorable victory.

From the start, the race promised drama. Royale Pagaille, last year’s champion, set the pace alongside Handstands over the extended three miles and a furlong. Approaching the final stages, Royale Pagaille looked set to repeat last year’s heroics, but Grey Dawning was traveling with an ease and authority that hinted at what was to come.

Turning into the straight, Grey Dawning moved up confidently. With Harry Skelton maintaining a poised and patient ride, the horse surged past Royale Pagaille halfway up the run-in and drew clear to win by two and three-quarter lengths. Royale Pagaille held on valiantly for second, proving once again why he is regarded as one of the finest steeplechasers in training.

“This is an incredible day,” said Dan Skelton. “Grey Dawning did everything we hoped for and more. After last year’s disappointment with the conditions, it was amazing to watch him perform so strongly today. The whole team has worked tirelessly, and to see it pay off like this is truly special.”

Harry Skelton added, “It’s been a long wait for Grey Dawning to show everyone his true ability. Last year didn’t go our way, but today he was magnificent. The team who rides him out every day, Clare and Tom, deserve huge credit for getting him into this form. It’s moments like this that make all the hard work worthwhile.”

Venetia Williams, trainer of runner-up Royale Pagaille, praised her horse’s effort. “He gave it everything, even when the ground wasn’t ideal. It was a tough task, but he jumped brilliantly and stayed in contention to the line. I’m very proud of him.”

Looking ahead, Dan Skelton confirmed that Grey Dawning would be aimed at the Gold Cup next, with one preparatory run in between. The victory at Haydock marks an important step in what promises to be an exciting season for the horse and his connections.

Finish Order:

  1. Grey Dawning – Harry Skelton / Dan Skelton

  2. Royale Pagaille

  3. Handstands
