The spotlight returns to Gulfstream Park on Saturday as a competitive field of experienced fillies and mares lines up for the $70,000 Lady’s Island, the feature event on an 11-race programme marking the resumption of the Royal Palm Meet. Several runners arrive with strong credentials, but much of the attention centres on stablemates Great Venezuela and Tiffany Gold, who both seek to rebound after troubled outings in their most recent appearances.

Trainer Victor Barboza Jr. will saddle the accomplished pair, both of whom endured difficult starts in the Little Miss Holly overnight handicap on June 14 over Gulfstream’s Tapeta surface. Saturday’s contest, to be run over five furlongs on the turf, presents a fresh opportunity as both mares switch back to grass while breaking from favourable outside draws.
Great Venezuela, a Florida-bred five-year-old owned by Orlyana Farm, has established herself as one of the most consistent sprint mares in training. Drawn in Post 8 with Diego Herrera aboard, she enters the race after finishing third despite hopping at the start, suffering interference and racing wide throughout the Little Miss Holly.
Her overall record speaks for itself. With nine victories from 19 starts and career earnings exceeding $445,000, Great Venezuela has excelled on both synthetic and turf surfaces. Although most of her victories have come on Tapeta, she has finished in the first three in eight of her nine turf appearances, including success in the Lightning City Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs and a runner-up finish in the Sunshine Filly & Mare Turf at Gulfstream in 2025.
Barboza believes the outside draw could prove a significant advantage.
He noted that his mare had been unfortunate at the start in her last two races and said a clean break over the shorter five-furlong trip would greatly improve her prospects. In his view, Great Venezuela possesses the strongest credentials in the field.
Tiffany Gold, who breaks from Post 7 under Edwin Gonzalez, also has fond memories of this race after capturing last year’s Lady’s Island in front-running fashion before an extended absence from competition.
The five-year-old returned successfully in May with an impressive victory but struggled in the Little Miss Holly after being bumped leaving the gate and forced to contest a demanding early pace before weakening late. Barboza feels the return to turf and the shorter distance are much more suitable to her strengths and expects a sharper performance this time.
The trainer is also represented by Le Amazonia, who starts from Post 2 with Samy Camacho. The mare finished second in the Golden Beach overnight handicap in April before enjoying a brief freshening. A proven performer on both turf and Tapeta, she has consistently held her own against many of Saturday’s rivals and appears capable of another bold effort.
One possible absentee is Vindicate Cha Cha, winner of the Little Miss Holly. Trainer Michael Lerman indicated the mare would only compete if the race were transferred to the Tapeta surface, believing her best performances have consistently come on synthetic rather than turf.
Among the remaining challengers, Greenfield Cougar brings encouraging recent form after overcoming traffic problems to finish second in the Little Miss Holly, while Coco Abarrio arrives after a placing in the Captiva Island. Laila Bella Girl, successful over the course and distance earlier this month, and Tree C’s Kai complete the field.
The Lady’s Island carries added significance as it honours the accomplished Florida-bred mare whose career between 2017 and 2021 produced 18 victories from 35 starts, including seven stakes triumphs highlighted by consecutive editions of the Grade 3 Sugar Swirl and Musical Romance.
With proven class, familiar rivals and a return to preferred conditions, Saturday’s renewal promises an intriguing contest headed by Barboza’s experienced trio, particularly Great Venezuela and Tiffany Gold, who will both be hoping cleaner starts lead to very different outcomes.
