An entertaining afternoon of flat racing unfolded at Goodwood Racecourse on Thursday, May 22, as racegoers witnessed a mixture of experienced campaigners and rising talents produce eye-catching performances across a competitive seven-race card.

The picturesque Sussex venue once again delivered dramatic finishes, strong staying displays, and exciting sprint action, with several horses enhancing their reputations in style.

The opening contest at 1:57 PM, the Soil Association 80th Anniversary Conditions Stakes over six furlongs, went the way of the consistent Night In Vegas (IRE) under a confident ride from Charles Bishop. The gelding showed excellent early pace and travelled smoothly throughout before quickening nicely inside the final furlong to secure victory. The performance highlighted both speed and composure, giving connections plenty to celebrate in the Class 2 contest. Night In Vegas handled the conditions impressively and proved too strong for the chasing pack in the closing stages.

The second race of the afternoon, the British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes at 2:32 PM, saw exciting youngster Pershaada (IRE) announce herself as a filly to follow. Ridden by Sean Levey, the two-year-old displayed sharp acceleration over the five-furlong trip and looked highly professional despite her relative inexperience. She travelled strongly throughout the race before producing a smart finishing effort to move clear late on. Her victory suggested there could be plenty more to come as the season progresses.

At 3:07 PM, the Track Radio Handicap Stakes over two miles provided a thorough test of stamina, and it was Bahadur who emerged victorious under Cieren Fallon. The staying contest developed into a tactical affair, but Bahadur responded impressively when asked for an effort in the straight. Fallon judged the pace well and timed his challenge perfectly, allowing the horse to take command approaching the final furlong. Bahadur stayed on strongly to seal an impressive success in the Class 3 event.

The partnership of Cieren Fallon and trainer connections enjoyed further success in the 3:42 PM British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies’ Handicap Stakes as Orionis produced a determined display over one mile and four furlongs. The filly showed excellent stamina and balance around the undulating track, gradually building momentum before taking control late in the race. Fallon once again delivered a composed ride, guiding Orionis to a deserved victory after a sustained challenge from rivals in the final stages.

One of the feature races of the afternoon came at 4:17 PM with the Listed Fitzdares Festival Stakes. The high-quality contest over one mile, one furlong and 202 yards produced a thrilling finish as Boiling Point (IRE) stormed home under Shane Gray. Competing against a strong field, Boiling Point showed both class and determination to claim the prestigious Listed prize. The horse travelled comfortably for much of the race before producing a powerful finishing burst that proved decisive inside the closing furlong. The victory marked an important achievement and could open the door for even bigger targets later in the campaign.

The Edward Bulmer Natural Paint Handicap Stakes at 4:52 PM saw Crimson Spirit continue a fine run of form with a polished display over seven furlongs. Guided by Ray Dawson, the horse settled nicely before making steady headway approaching the final quarter-mile. Crimson Spirit showed a smart turn of foot to move ahead of rivals and maintained the advantage all the way to the line. The success reflected the horse’s improving consistency and adaptability in competitive handicap company.

The concluding race of the afternoon, the Sustainable Food Trust Handicap Stakes at 5:27 PM, produced another exciting sprint finish as Seven Questions (IRE) delivered a strong late challenge to claim victory under experienced jockey Jamie Spencer. Known for his patient riding style, Spencer once again timed his run to perfection. Seven Questions stayed calm in the early stages before unleashing an impressive burst of speed inside the closing furlong to get up and win the five-furlong contest in dramatic fashion.

Overall, the Goodwood meeting delivered an excellent day of racing filled with quality performances, tactical riding, and memorable finishes.
