Scandinavia produced another outstanding staying performance to successfully defend the Group 1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup at Goodwood Racecourse on Wednesday, extending his unbeaten run to seven races with a decisive victory in one of the festival’s feature contests.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained runner once again demonstrated his quality over two miles, overcoming an eventful race to defeat a strong field. Ridden by Ryan Moore, Scandinavia travelled comfortably before taking control in the closing stages to secure victory by eight and a half lengths.
The contest featured an early incident when Amiloc became a loose horse shortly after the start. The rider was unseated as the stalls opened, and the horse later rejoined the field, causing interference in the home straight. Trawlerman, who had been setting the pace and remained firmly in contention, was among those affected as the loose horse crossed his path approaching the final stages.
Despite the disruption, Scandinavia continued to gather momentum after drawing alongside Trawlerman near the three-furlong marker. Once in front, the defending champion quickly established a clear advantage and stayed on strongly to the finish, underlining his status as one of Europe’s leading staying performers.
Trawlerman kept on well after the interference to finish second, while Yorkshire Cup winner Rahiebb stayed on for third, completing the placings in a race that tested both stamina and composure.
The victory marked a successful title defence for Scandinavia, who has now won the Goodwood Cup in successive seasons and extended an impressive winning sequence. The performance also added another major Group 1 success to the outstanding partnership of trainer Aidan O’Brien and jockey Ryan Moore during the Qatar Goodwood Festival.
