There was a palpable buzz in the room as Ken Freirich sealed his historic commitment to Breeders’ Cup Charities with a handshake and a warm smile, signaling not just generosity, but a deep passion for the Thoroughbred racing community. The international philanthropist and racehorse owner has pledged $500,000 to Breeders’ Cup Charities, marking the largest leadership gift in the organization’s history.

The donation, spread over three and a half years, is designed to strengthen the charitable foundations of the Thoroughbred industry and encourage long-term giving among owners, breeders, and racing enthusiasts. Freirich, already well-known for supporting the industry through music-inspired initiatives and prior charitable matches, hopes his gesture will inspire others to plan for impactful philanthropy.

“This is about more than dollars,” Freirich said. “It’s about setting a standard for the future and showing that even a single act of generosity can ripple through the entire industry.”

The gift builds on his previous support, including a $100,000 match during Breeders’ Cup Charities’ Annual Day of Giving in July, which helped raise more than $200,000. Of the new donation, $50,000 will be allocated as a matching fund for the “Champions Give Back” campaign, running from October 1 through the World Championships on October 31–November 1. Additional fundraising initiatives, including donations of all royalties from Breeders’ Cup merchandise, will be announced in the coming weeks.

Breeders’ Cup President and CEO Drew Fleming expressed gratitude, noting that Freirich’s support “sets an example for the entire Thoroughbred industry and underscores the importance of long-term charitable planning.”

Freirich’s connection to the sport is more than financial. He has been a partner in elite horses such as 2022 Horse of the Year Flightline, Belmont Stakes winner Mo Donegal, and Grade 1 winner Sandman. His involvement in the sport, combined with his philanthropic vision, highlights a commitment to nurturing both horses and the people behind them.

The 2025 Breeders’ Cup Charities initiative focuses on five pillars: Thoroughbred aftercare, jockey health and wellness, backstretch and industry workers, equine research, and broader community initiatives. Freirich will also serve as an advisor to the charity, helping guide strategic contributions and fundraising campaigns.

With this landmark gift, Freirich not only provides critical funding but also reinforces the role of leadership and vision in shaping the future of Thoroughbred racing philanthropy.
