The road toward the spring’s biggest prizes gathers momentum this weekend as the Fountain of Youth (G2) headlines a stacked Saturday programme at Gulfstream Park. With five unbeaten colts among the 11 declared, the $425,000 contest has drawn a field brimming with promise and depth, and the Fountain of Youth once again stands as a pivotal early-season examination for the division’s leading three-year-olds.
Run over 1 1/16 miles, the Fountain of Youth offers 105 qualifying points (50-25-15-10-5) toward the Kentucky Derby, ensuring that both prestige and progression are firmly on the line. First post on the 10-race card is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. ET.
Napoleon Solo, last year’s authoritative winner of the Champagne Stakes, returns to action for the first time in nearly five months. The Chad Summers-trained colt dazzled at Saratoga on debut before stretching clear by 6½ lengths in the Champagne at Aqueduct on October 4. Connections opted to sidestep the autumn championships, leaving the Fountain of Youth as his long-awaited seasonal return. Kendrick Carmouche takes the call.
Commandment arrives in peak form after a commanding victory in the Mucho Macho Man Stakes on January 3. Trained by Brad Cox, the son of Into Mischief had earlier broken his maiden at Churchill Downs in similarly emphatic fashion. Irad Ortiz Jr., enjoying another productive Championship Meet, retains the mount.
Todd Pletcher, a four-time winner of the Fountain of Youth, is represented by unbeaten Jackson Hole. The colt followed a debut score at Gulfstream with a decisive allowance victory at Fair Grounds. By Florida Derby hero Nyquist, Jackson Hole carries both pedigree and poise into his toughest test yet, with John Velazquez booked to ride.
Chief Wallabee and Solitude Dude add further intrigue. Chief Wallabee, trained by Bill Mott, impressed over seven furlongs on debut here in January and now stretches out around two turns. Solitude Dude, one of three entered by Saffie Joseph Jr., has compiled a flawless three-race record, including wins in the Inaugural at Tampa and the Swale Stakes at Gulfstream. Saturday marks his first attempt beyond sprint distances, with Flavien Prat named aboard.
Others engaged include Holy Bull (G3) runner-up Bravaro, along with Talkin, Rockies Balboa, Bull by the Horns, Global Aviator and Lost Money, ensuring the Fountain of Youth is no straightforward assignment for any contender.
Supporting the Fountain of Youth is the $225,000 Davona Dale Stakes for three-year-old fillies over a mile. Nine have been declared, among them Forward Gal (G3) winner On Time Girl, runner-up Imperatrice and Cash Run scorer Haute Diva. Paradise, Swing Vote and She Be Smooth arrive off maiden victories, giving the race a blend of proven stakes form and emerging talent.
Elsewhere, last year’s Fountain of Youth winner Burnham Square is slated to reappear in an allowance optional claiming event on turf, his first start since finishing second in the Nashville Derby (G3) at Kentucky Downs in August.
Sunday’s programme features a 10-race card beginning at 12:20 p.m., highlighted by competitive allowance and maiden events across both surfaces. Irad Ortiz Jr., who enjoyed a four-win Saturday recently, continues to set the pace among the riders at the Championship Meet.
With unbeaten reputations on the line and valuable qualifying points at stake, the Fountain of Youth promises to bring clarity to the evolving three-year-old picture while offering racegoers a compelling afternoon of top-class competition.
