FOREVER YOUNG eyes Saudi Cup glory with Sakai’s steady hand

Jockey Ryusei Sakai exudes calm confidence as he prepares to ride the talented Japanese colt FOREVER YOUNG in Saturday’s $20 million Saudi Cup, the world’s richest horse race. The high-stakes event at King Abdulaziz Racecourse promises intense competition, but Sakai remains unfazed, buoyed by his mount’s proven prowess and meticulous preparation.
FOREVER YOUNG, trained by Yoshito Yahagi, is no stranger to the dirt surface in Riyadh. A year ago, the colt showcased his affinity for the track with a commanding victory in the $1.5 million Saudi Derby presented by ZOOD Realty. Since then, he has solidified his reputation on the global stage, securing impressive third-place finishes in both the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders’ Cup Classic. His most recent triumph came in December’s Tokyo Daishoten, a performance that has kept him in peak condition heading into this weekend’s marquee event.
“After the Tokyo Daishoten, he stayed at Yoshito Yahagi’s stable at Ritto Training Centre and remained in training, no break at a private property,” Sakai explained during a press briefing. “Three weeks before traveling to Saudi Arabia, he began steady workouts. Everything has gone very well so far.”
FOREVER YOUNG’s preparation in Riyadh has been seamless. On Wednesday, Sakai guided him through a brisk 1,300-meter breeze on the dirt track, followed by a relaxed 60-minute session in the training yard at the quarantine stable on Thursday.
Despite drawing the outermost gate—14 of 14—Sakai remains optimistic. “He traveled to Riyadh very well and has been relaxed and confident since arriving,” he said. “The wide gate isn’t a big concern, and distance-wise, there’s no issue either. He’s versatile and can handle any track condition.”
Sakai’s focus is clear: “This will be a highly competitive race, but my goal is to let him show what he’s capable of. I’m really looking forward to Saturday.”
Sakai, Yahagi, and owner Susumu Fujita also have SHIN EMPEROR, a stablemate of FOREVER YOUNG, competing in the $2 million Howden Neom Turf Cup. The 4 year old French bred colt by Siyouni, a brother to 2020 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner SOTTSASS, finished a strong second in November’s Group 1 Japan Cup after a lackluster Arc run. “He’s in good condition and suits the track here,” Sakai said, expressing confidence in his chances.
As the countdown to Saturday continues, Sakai’s cool-headed approach and faith in his mounts set the tone for what promises to be an electrifying chapter in international horse racing. With $22 million in combined prize money on the line across the Saudi Cup and the Howden Neom Turf Cup, the world will be watching.
