Wathnan Racing’s Commandment produced a performance of quiet authority and determination to land the Grade 1 Curlin Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, coming from the rear of the field to deny The Puma in a tight finish that unfolded only in the final strides.

Trained by Brad Cox, the son of Constitution showed grit and composure over the 1 1/8-mile trip, getting up in the final strides to deny The Puma by the slimmest of margins — a nose — in one of the closest finishes of the American prep season. The race, run as part of a rich 14-race card featuring multiple stakes contests, carried significant weight on the road to the Kentucky Derby, offering valuable qualifying points to the leading finishers.

Florida Derby 2026 Results: Commandment Delivers Late Charge

Settled at the rear for much of the journey under jockey Flavien Prat, Commandment appeared to have plenty to do turning for home after modest early fractions set by Wayne’s Law and tracked by Nearly. Nearly made an early move on the far turn, briefly taking control before The Puma swept past approaching the straight and looked set to seal the contest. However, Commandment was angled wide into the stretch, and once balanced, he responded gamely to Prat’s urgings.

In a driving finish, the colt displayed admirable resolve, inching closer with every stride before getting up right on the line to snatch victory. “He’s a solid horse and he showed it again today,” Cox remarked after the race, expressing satisfaction with the colt’s progression heading into the spring’s major targets. Prat admitted there was a moment of concern early on but was encouraged by the colt’s response in the straight. “Once he changed leads, he really picked up and gave me a strong run,” he said.

Commandment completed the distance in 1:49.99, underlining both stamina and determination in a performance that enhances his Classic credentials.

Finish Order and Key Performances

The Puma, coming off a strong win in the Tampa Bay Derby, ran a commendable race in defeat, taking the lead at the top of the straight and battling bravely to the wire. He finished just ahead of Chief Wallabee, who stayed on steadily for third.

Chief Wallabee, still relatively inexperienced, showed promise with a measured late effort, while Nearly, who had looked dominant in earlier outings this season, weakened in the closing stages to finish fourth. Wayne’s Law and Timeless Victory completed the field in fifth and sixth respectively after setting and chasing the early pace.

The performance not only gave Brad Cox successive wins in this key Gulfstream contest but also positioned Commandment firmly among the leading contenders for the upcoming Kentucky Derby, with the race historically producing numerous Classic winners. With valuable points secured and experience gained, the colt now looks set to head into the Derby with both momentum and confidence.
