On Saturday, February 14, the wide expanses of Flemington Racecourse will awaken to exactly that moment as the Victoria Racing Club stages the first Group 1 meeting of 2026, Black Caviar Lightning Race Day. From 12:05pm through 5:30pm, ten races will unfold in rising waves of intensity, building toward Race 8, the $1,000,000 Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning over 1000 metres, the undisputed centrepiece of the afternoon.
Fast horses, warm February air and the electric pull of elite sprinting will combine to give Flemington its first true autumn surge. The feature, run at weight for age, will honour the incomparable Black Caviar, the mare whose flawless career of 25 victories, including 15 at Group 1 level, still defines Australian speed. On this stage, eight sprinters will attempt to carve their own chapter in a race that carries both prestige and expectation.
The programme will open at 12:05pm with the $175,000 TAB Talindert Stakes, a Listed set weights plus penalties contest over 1100 metres for two-year-olds. Seven juveniles will step out, and early brilliance will set the tempo for the afternoon. At 12:35pm, Race 2, the TAB We’re On Handicap Benchmark 78, will stretch to 2000 metres with 16 runners competing for $80,000, ensuring stamina will enter the conversation early.
Race 3 at 1:10pm will lift the quality again with the $175,000 Desirable Stakes, a Listed event over 1400 metres for three-year-old fillies under set weights plus penalties conditions. Seven runners will test class and composure. The VOBIS Gold Prelude QC will follow at 1:45pm, a $200,000 quality over 1100 metres for three-year-olds and upwards, with nine runners expected to add sharp speed to the card.
At 2:20pm, The Schweppes Plate, a Benchmark 90 handicap worth $150,000 over 1200 metres, will keep the sprint focus alive with nine runners. The tempo will shift at 2:55pm when the $150,000 Be Captivated Trophy unfolds over a testing 2500 metres. Eleven stayers will line up, and patience will replace pure pace as the field navigates the staying journey.
Race 7 at 3:30pm, The Elms Handicap, will present a $175,000 Listed handicap over 1400 metres for nine runners, bridging the afternoon into its defining hour.
Then at 4:10pm, Flemington will hold its breath for Race 8, the $1,000,000 Black Caviar Lightning. Eight contenders will surge down the straight six furlongs in a contest that traditionally rewards raw speed and fearless execution. Giga Kick will partner E.P. Brown for C. Douglas. Baraqiel will combine B. Allen with the training partnership of Leon and Troy Corstens and Will Larkin. Benedetta will see J.L. Melham ride for C. Maher, while Tentyris will link D.M. Lane with Anthony and Sam Freedman. Beiwacht will unite B.J. Melham with C.J. Waller.
Marhoona will bring M.J. Dee together with M.J. Freedman. My Gladiola will be guided by J. Mott for J.R. McArdle, and Military Tycoon will see H.T. Coffey ride for C. Maher. In a 1000 metre Group 1, hesitation will not be forgiven, and the margin between triumph and heartbreak will be measured in strides.
The momentum will not fade after the feature. At 4:50pm, the $200,000 Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes over 1400 metres will showcase 11 three-year-old colts and geldings under set weights plus penalties conditions. The finale at 5:30pm will bring the $200,000 Group 3 Frances Tressady Stakes over 1400 metres for fillies and mares three years old and upwards, with ten runners closing the card in style.
Black Caviar Lightning Race Day will not simply mark a date on the calendar. It will signal that Group 1 racing has returned in full force. By the time the last of the ten races is run, Flemington Racecards 14 February will have delivered speed, stamina and spectacle in equal measure, and autumn racing will have been officially set alight.
