Racing at Epsom Downs Racecourse on Tuesday, April 21, has been postponed by one week and will now take place on Tuesday, April 28, after an ongoing problem with the course’s irrigation system left officials unable to prepare the track in time for racing.
The decision was taken in conjunction with the British Horseracing Authority after course management concluded that watering could not resume soon enough to provide a suitable surface for the early-season trials fixture. The Listed Blue Riband Trial will remain the headline contest on the revised date, with further details of the full programme to be confirmed.
Officials said a burst in the irrigation system was discovered earlier this month, preventing watering since Monday, April 13. A planned solution that would have allowed work to restart on Sunday, April 19, then encountered a further technical setback. Watering is now not expected to recommence until Tuesday, April 21, at the earliest.
Given the prevailing ground conditions, seasonal weather, and the distinctive gradients and cambers of the Surrey venue, racecourse officials determined that irrigation was essential to produce an acceptable and safe racing surface.
That made postponement unavoidable.
The switch gives trainers and owners an extra week before one of the spring’s important Derby pointers, while also preserving a valuable opportunity for inexperienced horses to gain experience around one of the sport’s most demanding circuits. Interest will now turn to the updated going report once watering resumes, with connections also keeping one eye on preparations for the famous summer festival in early June.
Jim Allen, General Manager at Epsom Downs Racecourse, said the decision had not been taken lightly.
He said the course was disappointed not to begin the season in its usual slot, but added that providing the best possible racing conditions had to come first. He also expressed hope that moving the fixture by a week would cause minimal disruption to plans for early-season targets.
Racegoers who already purchased tickets will have them transferred automatically to the new fixture, while refunds will be available for those unable to attend on the revised date.
For racing followers, the rescheduled meeting keeps the focus firmly on the Blue Riband Trial and the latest clues ahead of the Classic season. The Epsom Downs racecard April 28 is now set to attract renewed attention once final declarations are made.
