In a landmark moment for British racing, the 2025 Derby at Epsom Downs will implement 72-hour declarations, making it the first Group One Flat race in the UK to adopt the extended timeframe. Announced by The Jockey Club on Monday, May 5, the move marks a significant shift in tradition for the world’s most famous Flat race, first run in 1780 and now valued at £1.5 million.

By confirming runners and jockeys 72 hours in advance an entire day earlier than the current 48-hour standard—the aim is to enhance global anticipation, improve clarity around the final field, and fuel media interest ahead of the race. The decision follows widespread stakeholder consultation and is expected to increase fan engagement in the lead-up to the 246th running of the Derby, set for Saturday, June 7, 2025.

Jim Allen, General Manager of Epsom Downs Racecourse, said: “We’re always looking to innovate, and this is another bold step that aligns with our legacy of firsts. From hosting the UK’s first recorded race in 1661, to the Derby becoming the first race filmed in 1896 and the first sporting broadcast in 1931—Epsom Downs has long led the way.”

In tandem with the extended declaration period, a revamped draw ceremony will also take place. Using the iconic FA Cup draw balls and equipment, the 2025 Derby draw will be conducted live at Epsom’s Picturehouse cinema on Wednesday, June 4 at 11am, with Racing TV broadcasting the event. The enhanced presentation aims to deepen local and national involvement, creating theatre around the final field assignment.

This refined ceremony builds on the recent trend of replacing randomised draw systems with live, community-based events that heighten the excitement of Derby week. “We wanted a more meaningful, celebratory atmosphere—and Epsom’s Picturehouse, in the heart of the town, provides exactly that,” Allen added.

All other races on Derby Day and Ladies Day will continue with 48-hour declarations. However, the Derby’s new schedule will see final declarations and jockey confirmations completed by 10am and 1pm respectively on Wednesday, June 4, allowing fans and media more time to follow the build-up.

The 2025 Derby Festival’s timeline includes key entry and scratching stages, with the five-day confirmation and supplementary stage on Monday, June 2, and the final declarations on Wednesday, June 4. With this innovation, the Jockey Club and Epsom Downs reaffirm their commitment to advancing British racing without compromising its rich history.
