The 247th running of the Epsom Derby unfolded at Epsom Downs on Saturday with a finish that carried both authority and significance, as Christmas Day delivered a decisive performance to land one of racing’s most storied contests. The victory marked a landmark afternoon for trainer Aidan O’Brien, who extended his record in the race while also reaching a major career milestone in British Classic success.

On a day shaped by testing ground and strong mid-race positioning, Christmas Day rose to the occasion with a performance that grew in confidence as the race developed. The colt, by Camelot, travelled smoothly behind the early leader before making his move turning into the final stages, quickening clear and staying on strongly to the line.
Trained by Aidan O’Brien, the three-year-old produced a composed and professional effort to settle matters by two and three-quarter lengths, with Maltese Cross running on well to claim second and James J Braddock staying on for third.
The race carried additional significance for Ballydoyle’s long-standing dominance in the Classic sphere, as the win represented a 12th Derby success for O’Brien and his 50th British Classic overall.
Christmas Day, a half-brother to multiple stakes winner Missed The Cut, was given a confident ride by Ronan Whelan, who judged the pace expertly before committing in the straight and never looking back.
The early stages saw stablemate Action take the field along at a steady tempo, with Christmas Day positioned just behind. That tactical placement proved decisive as the field began to compress turning for home. Once asked for an effort, Christmas Day responded fluently, stretching clear while others laboured in the demanding conditions.
Behind the front two, James J Braddock produced a sustained effort to secure third, finishing ahead of Bay of Brilliance in fourth and Alderman in fifth, rounding out a competitive renewal in which several contenders were still in contention turning into the straight.
For O’Brien, the result also added another chapter to a remarkable record in the Epsom Derby, a race he first won in 2001 and has continued to shape over more than two decades at the highest level.
Ronan Whelan reflected on the performance with evident satisfaction, noting how smoothly the race unfolded and how comfortably his mount travelled through each phase. He highlighted the ease with which Christmas Day handled the rising ground and the way the colt lengthened when asked.
Tom Marquand, aboard runner-up Maltese Cross, felt his mount ran with credit, describing a smooth passage through much of the race before the winner’s decisive acceleration made the difference. He suggested the conditions may have played a part but praised the effort and attitude shown throughout.
Connections of third-placed James J Braddock also took encouragement from a strong placing in a race of this depth, particularly given the colt’s relative inexperience at this level. Despite a slightly unsettled preliminaries phase, he stayed on strongly when it mattered most, suggesting further progress could be ahead.
Further down the field, Bay of Brilliance and Alderman both showed resilience to stay on into the frame positions, while several others found the conditions more demanding in the closing stages.
