Woodbine Entertainment has confirmed that racing will return to the renowned E.P. Taylor Turf Course on Saturday, August 8, marking an earlier-than-expected reopening following an extensive renovation project aimed at improving the long-term quality and reliability of one of North America’s best-known turf racing venues.

Originally expected to reopen in September, the course has completed its redevelopment ahead of schedule, allowing horses to return several weeks earlier. The project began immediately after the 2025 King’s Plate and focused on modernising critical sections of the racing surface to support safer and more consistent competition.
The work centred on the backstretch portion of the course, where crews installed an entirely new drainage network, upgraded irrigation infrastructure and rebuilt the racing profile. These improvements were designed to enhance water management, maintain uniform footing and strengthen the course for future seasons.
Before racing resumes, the renovated turf course will undergo a final series of gallop sessions involving horses and riders. The evaluations are intended to confirm that the surface performs as expected before it is cleared for competitive use.
If those final inspections are successfully completed, the first race on the renewed surface will be an allowance contest scheduled for August 8. The reopening will mark the return of racing to the E.P. Taylor Turf Course for the first time since construction began.
Following its comeback, the venue will stage several allowance races before welcoming stakes action back on King’s Plate Day on August 15. Among the featured contests returning to the course are the Soaring Free Stakes and the Catch A Glimpse Stakes, both set to be run over their traditional 6½-furlong distance.
The renovation also strengthens preparations for some of Canada’s biggest turf events later in the season. The E.P. Taylor Turf Course is home to major fixtures including the Woodbine Mile, E.P. Taylor Stakes, Natalma Stakes, Summer Stakes, and the prestigious Canadian International, all of which are expected to be contested on the restored surface during the autumn campaign.
The return of the E.P. Taylor Turf Course will also allow Woodbine to once again operate both of its turf tracks. Over the past year, the Inner Turf handled the entire turf racing schedule while officials carefully managed its workload to preserve the surface. With both courses now available, racing officials will have greater flexibility when planning the programme and can expand turf racing opportunities across different classes throughout the remainder of the season.
The early reopening represents an important milestone for Canadian Thoroughbred racing, restoring one of the country’s signature racing surfaces ahead of several of the year’s most significant meetings and providing participants with improved racing options for the months ahead.
