Blue Bolt strengthened her claims for a return to the highest level after producing a polished performance in the G2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot, giving trainer Andrew Balding another reason to look towards Group One targets later in the season.
The Juddmonte-owned filly travelled smoothly through the competitive 15-runner field before quickening decisively in the closing stages. Ridden by Colin Keane, Blue Bolt overcame a wide draw to secure a convincing success and underline her continued progress.

Keane settled Blue Bolt in midfield after the start, ensuring the daughter of Blue Point had cover before the field turned for home. Once asked for her effort approaching the final furlong, she responded strongly and moved clear to win by nearly two lengths.
Irish challenger Jancis filled the runner-up spot after another brave display, while Friendly Soul finished third after encountering trouble during the race before staying on late.
The victory continued Blue Bolt’s rise after she finished second in the G1 Sun Chariot Stakes last season. She arrived at Royal Ascot following a Listed success at Goodwood and confirmed that she remains a filly with significant potential.
Balding revealed that the next major objective could be the Falmouth Stakes, with Blue Bolt now considered ready for another attempt at elite competition.
“She has hardly put a foot wrong apart from her first run at Southwell. We have had this plan in mind for some time, and it is very satisfying when everything comes together,” Balding said.
“She is relaxing better this year, which is a big help. Colin gave her a brilliant ride because it was not an easy draw, but he was positive and found the right position. We know she stays a mile well, so we will probably remain at that trip.”
Blue Bolt’s performance has increased expectations surrounding her future targets.
Colin Keane praised the filly’s development, saying she had continued to improve with age and experience.
“She was progressive last year and came back well earlier this season, so we arrived hopeful. You can never be completely confident at Royal Ascot, but we felt she was still moving forward,” Keane said.
“She is straightforward and has improved mentally as well as physically. Hopefully she can keep progressing because she looks like a filly heading towards Group One races.”
Jancis, trained by Willie McCreery, produced another strong effort in second and was praised for her determination on quicker ground.
“She has done herself proud. She enjoys this type of ground and kept going all the way to the line. A very good filly beat us, but we will continue aiming high,” McCreery said.
Friendly Soul’s team were left satisfied despite finishing third after a troubled passage. Trainer John Gosden explained that the filly was badly positioned early before producing a late run.
“She was in the stalls a long time and got caught between horses when they jumped away. From there it was almost impossible to win, but she finished strongly and ran a superb race,” Gosden said.
Jockey Oisin Murphy added that the race did not unfold ideally, but Friendly Soul still showed plenty of ability in the closing stages.
The Duke Of Cambridge Stakes result confirmed Blue Bolt as one of the leading older fillies to watch, with a possible Group One challenge now firmly on the agenda.
