Do Gooder Returns to Gulfstream Turf for Mile Test

Do Gooder returns to Gulfstream Park turf for Frolic’s Revenge

Do Gooder will return to the Gulfstream Park turf as trainer Jena Antonucci looks to place the versatile five-year-old mare in a spot that can bring out her best. The daughter of Good Samaritan will line up in the $70,000 Frolic’s Revenge, a one-mile turf contest for fillies and mares aged three and older, with the nine-race programme beginning at 12:20 p.m.

The assignment represents a return to familiar ground for Do Gooder, who has won two of three starts on the Gulfstream turf. Both victories came during her three-year-old campaign, and her record at the Florida track has encouraged Antonucci to bring her back to the surface after an unsuccessful experiment on dirt.

Do Gooder has already shown that she can compete at a high level, having taken on Grade 1 and Grade 2 company on both turf and dirt. Her most recent appearance on the Gulfstream grass came in December, when she finished fourth in the one-mile Suwannee River after encountering trouble early in the race.

That form has since received a boost. Crevalle d’Oro, who finished ahead of Do Gooder in that contest, subsequently went on to finish second in the $500,000 Pegasus Filly & Mare Turf (G2).

Her latest outing came in the six-furlong Honorable Miss (G2) at Saratoga. Do Gooder broke poorly, raced wide and never managed to become a factor. It was her first start on dirt after 12 consecutive appearances on turf.

The switch back to grass therefore looks a logical move for a mare whose best performances have come when she has been able to use her natural speed. Jose Morelos will take the ride from Post 7, having partnered Do Gooder for both of her Gulfstream turf victories last spring.

Those wins came in front-running style, although that tactic has been harder for Do Gooder to employ since her most recent victory, which came in a six-and-a-half-furlong turf sprint at Kentucky Downs last August.

Do Gooder has also been preparing steadily since returning from New York. She recorded a half-mile work in 47.43 seconds at Gulfstream Park on August 5, providing her connections with an encouraging indication ahead of the race.

The field contains several rivals with credentials of their own.

Turino, drawn in Post 6 with Rasheed Hughes, will arrive seeking a third consecutive victory. The five-year-old mare already has a win over this course and distance, having rallied to take the Monroe in May. She was entered for the Powder Break in July but did not run after that race was transferred from the turf to the Tapeta surface because of rain.

Stablemates Little Jamie and Hello Hello Hello are also entered. Little Jamie, starting from Post 4 with Micah Husbands, made her turf debut in the Monroe and finished third after a lengthy break from racing. Hello Hello Hello, drawn on the rail with Edwin Gonzalez, most recently finished fourth in the Powder Break.

Miss Mary Nell returns to turf for the first time since the Monroe, where she finished a neck behind Turino. The four-year-old Florida-bred mare subsequently finished seventh in the Powder Break before placing fourth in the Little Miss Holly handicap over five and a half furlongs on Tapeta in June.

Her record also includes a notable performance earlier in the year when she won a mile-and-70-yard Tapeta contest against a field that included multiple graded-stakes winner Warming.

Fantasy Performer will occupy Post 2 with Miguel Vasquez. The mare won the Key West handicap on January 1 and later finished second in the Powder Break. Lets Go Koko, drawn in Post 3 with Diego Herrera, brings considerable experience to the field, with nine career victories and a previous win in the 2025 Powder Break.

For Antonucci, the main objective is to give Do Gooder another opportunity to build on a record that has already taken her into demanding company. The Gulfstream turf has provided some of her most productive performances, and the return to a two-turn mile gives her the chance to settle back into a setting where she has previously produced her best racing.

The Frolic’s Revenge carries the name of the South Florida mare who won eight of 29 starts during a career largely spent in the region. Five of those victories came in stakes competition, including the 2011 Ginger Brew at Gulfstream Park and three stakes races in 2012.

With Do Gooder back on turf and several proven course performers in opposition, the mile contest promises to provide one of the more closely watched races on the Gulfstream Park programme.
