After a night of compelling action under the lights at Happy Valley Racecourse , the Hong Kong trainers’ championship took a fresh turn as Danny Shum surged to the summit with a well-constructed treble on Wednesday, 13 May. The veteran handler’s trio of winners not only reshaped the standings but also ended the long-running dominance of Mark Newnham and Caspar Fownes at the top.

Happy Valley race results Hong Kong

The latest Happy Valley race results Hong Kong underline a dramatic shift in momentum at the top of the trainers’ table, with Shum now setting the pace in a tightly packed title race.

With Romantic Gladiator, General Redwood and Leading Agility all striking in their respective assignments, Shum became the first trainer outside of Newnham or Fownes to lead the championship since September, ending an extraordinary sequence in which the top position had changed hands 11 times between the pair.

Romantic Gladiator, guided by Zac Purton, produced a polished display in the Class 3 French May Trophy Handicap over 1650m, showing both promise and temperament in equal measure. General Redwood followed up in the first section of the Class 4 Saint-Cloud Handicap over the same trip under Angus Chung, while Leading Agility delivered a breakthrough success in the Class 4 Chantilly Handicap over 1200m for Lyle Hewitson.

Danny Shum treble Happy Valley

Shum’s treble lifted him to 54 wins for the season, edging ahead of Newnham (52) and Fownes (51), with David Hayes (48), Francis Lui (47) and John Size (45) still firmly in contention. With 17 meetings remaining, the battle remains finely poised.

Reflecting on his position at the head of affairs, Shum maintained a measured tone, stressing horse welfare over championship pressure, even as his stable continues to fire on all cylinders.

Romantic Gladiator, formerly unbeaten in England under the name Amakhala Warrior, added further intrigue to the evening. The three-year-old earned a significant bonus after a controlled ride from Purton, though both jockey and trainer noted the gelding’s tendency to race keenly.

General Redwood’s strong finish and Leading Agility’s first career win added depth to Shum’s standout evening, but the broader narrative was the tightening championship contest that now spans multiple leading yards.

Elsewhere on the card, 13-time champion trainer John Size kept his challenge alive as Nebraskan produced a second straight win, leading throughout under Andrea Atzeni in the second section of the Class 4 Chantilly Handicap over 1200m, finally building on a run of placed efforts earlier in his career.

Francis Lui also strengthened his campaign as Packing Angel returned to winning form in the Class 2 ParisLongchamp Handicap over 1650m under Harry Bentley. Once a prominent Derby performer, the gelding’s return to peak condition marks a patient and carefully managed comeback following surgery.

Zac Purton continued his fine season with a double, moving to 1,992 Hong Kong career victories after steering The Azure to a decisive success from an unfavourable draw in the second section of the Class 4 Saint-Cloud Handicap. His timing and judgment proved crucial once again as the race unfolded late.

There were further notable performances from Tony Cruz and Hugh Bowman with Liveandletlive taking the Class 3 France Galop Cup Handicap over 1800m, while Cody Mo’s Motor impressed in the Class 3 Deauville Handicap over 1200m under Karis Teetan.

With momentum shifting across several stables, the closing stages of the season promise a closely fought conclusion, particularly with Shum now setting the benchmark in a rapidly evolving championship race.

Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on Sunday, where the next chapter of the title battle is set to unfold.
