Dan Skelton had already secured the Jump trainers’ championship before racing got underway at Sandown Park on Saturday, but the celebrations took on even greater significance when his stable star Doyen Quest delivered a commanding performance to push the yard beyond the £5 million prize-money mark for the season.

The eight-year-old Doyen Quest, sent off at 11-4, made every yard of the running in the Grade Two bet365 Oaksey Chase under Harry Skelton, drawing clear after the last to score by six lengths. It was a performance full of authority, met with a rousing reception from the trainer’s travelling team, many of whom had made the journey from Warwickshire to witness a landmark day.

There was a distinct sense of occasion as the winner returned to the enclosure, with Skelton’s staff in full voice after a season that has steadily built towards this moment. Having already surpassed £4 million earlier in the campaign, this latest success elevated the yard into new territory.

“That was absolutely amazing – to do it in front of our rowdy lot,” Skelton said, visibly moved in the aftermath. “But let’s get stuck in to celebrations. It might never happen again and days like this are unbelievable.”

Reflecting on the scale of the achievement, Skelton was quick to underline the collective effort behind the numbers. “We work hard – although I’m not saying everyone else doesn’t – and we’ve learned to appreciate the ups. We’re all in this boat together. The owners have just been awesome.

“With our team and owners, you can afford to reach and come up with grand ambitions and plans. If I can think we can do it, why not try it?”

The success of Doyen Quest also carried a layer of personal history, with the horse running in the colours of Norman Lake, one of Skelton’s earliest supporters. It was those same colours that had recently provided the stable with a winner at Perth, marking their 41st track success of the season, before this latest milestone was achieved.

“I’m a very proud man,” Skelton added. “It’s a weird feeling – there’s something not quite normal about that.”

Earlier on the card, the Skelton team had set the tone for the day with victory in the Changing Young Lives At Jamie’s Farm Fillies’ Juvenile Handicap. Queen Maeve, ridden by Tristan Durrell at 20-1, led home stablemate Made U Blush, partnered by Harry Skelton, by half a length in a closely fought finish.

That early success provided a fitting prelude to what would become a defining afternoon. Skelton later reflected on the broader journey, from modest beginnings to leading the sport’s standings.

“The whole day has been incredible. I can’t believe I get to live this life,” he said. “When I first started, it was a small team and there was a lot of pressure. Now, it’s a community. We’ve grown together.

“The whole team wanted to do this as much as I did. We got beat for two years at the last moment, and now we’ve won together. It feels brilliant – we are a team.”

He also paid tribute to the role of family and long-standing staff, noting how the yard has evolved into something far beyond its early days. “It’s something very special. People who started with us now have families of their own. We all do it together and need each other.”

Despite the scale of success, Skelton maintained a grounded perspective, acknowledging both the challenges and lessons of a demanding season. “This is sport and you get beat. We’re around a 19–20 percent strike rate, which means most of ours don’t win. You have to learn how to deal with defeat.

“When we got beaten before, others had the stronger team. We’ve improved to get here. The key is to keep learning and getting better.”

As the curtain falls on a remarkable campaign, the figures alone tell a compelling story, but it is the sense of unity and shared ambition within the Skelton operation that has defined their rise.

For now, though, the focus remains on celebrating a season that has rewritten the yard’s history.
