Commandment Builds Kentucky Derby Momentum with Florida Derby (G1) Triumph

Commandment surges late to win Curlin Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park

Saturday’s Curlin Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park offered another major clue on the road to Churchill Downs, and it was Wathnan Racing’s Commandment who emerged with his reputation enhanced after a hard-fought victory over The Puma.

Trained by Brad Cox, the colt had to overcome both a steady early pace and a testing trip from the rear, but his strong late response under Flavien Prat suggested he belongs firmly among the leading names in the Classic conversation.

There had already been enough in Commandment’s earlier performances to mark him down as a colt of considerable promise, but this was the afternoon when that promise took on sharper meaning. In a race that demanded patience, balance and finishing power, he delivered all three.

Even before stepping onto the track, the imposing son of Into Mischief hinted at his presence. There is a quiet authority about him in the paddock—one that Brad Cox has come to recognise as a sign of what may follow.

“He’s big, but when he arrives in the paddock and knows when it’s showtime, he kind of blows up a little bit,” Cox observed. “He has a great mind. That’s one of his biggest strengths. He’s already a Grade 1 winner at three and achieved a lot in a short time.”

Commandment’s Late Surge Defines Curlin Florida Derby (G1)

Run over nine furlongs, the Curlin Florida Derby (G1) unfolded at a measured tempo, leaving Commandment with plenty to do from the rear of the six-runner field. The fractions were modest—48.80 seconds for the half-mile and 1:13 for three-quarters—placing the emphasis on acceleration and timing rather than attrition.

Under Flavien Prat, Commandment began to improve on the far turn, sweeping three wide before being angled even farther out into the straight. Ahead of him, The Puma had moved into the lead and appeared to have gained a decisive advantage at a crucial stage.

What followed was a sustained and determined finish. Commandment lengthened with every stride, gradually wearing down the leader before lowering his head right on the line to snatch victory by a nose in a gripping photo finish. The Puma stayed on for second, with Chief Wallabee a length and a half away in third.

“He’s taken a step forward in every race this winter,” Cox said. “To overcome a softer pace and come around good horses shows his class. We’re fortunate to have him and excited about what lies ahead.”

Kentucky Derby Aspirations Strengthened

The victory firmly places Commandment among the leading contenders for the Kentucky Derby (G1) on May 2, with his progression through the spring continuing in impressive fashion.

After an eye-catching maiden win at Churchill Downs, he dominated the Mucho Macho Man Stakes by 6¾ lengths in January before following up with a determined late run to land the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) in February. This latest success, achieved under sterner conditions and in a tighter finish, represented his most significant statement yet.

“He looks really good this morning,” Cox added, clearly encouraged by how the colt had emerged from the race. “We look forward to the rest of the year with him.”

A Rare Double and a Growing Stable Narrative

Commandment’s success also completed a notable double for Cox, who earlier on the card saddled Prom Queen to victory in the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2). In doing so, he joined an elite list of trainers to have captured both races on the same day, a feat previously achieved by Hall of Famers Woody Stephens and Todd Pletcher.

“That’s a great accomplishment,” Cox said. “To be mentioned alongside those names means a lot. It reflects the strength of the team behind these horses.”

Prom Queen, lightly raced but progressive, has now emerged as a serious contender for the Kentucky Oaks, adding further depth to Cox’s Classic team this spring.

Brave Effort in Defeat

For trainer Gustavo Delgado, the result was another narrow miss in the Curlin Florida Derby (G1), as The Puma ran a gallant race in defeat. The colt struck the front turning for home and looked poised to settle the contest, only to be denied in the final stride.

It marked another runner-up finish for Delgado in the race, continuing a sequence of near misses in one of Gulfstream Park’s key Derby tests. Yet there is precedent for encouragement—his 2023 runner-up Mage went on to claim Kentucky Derby honours.

If Saturday’s contest is any guide, Commandment now carries a similarly compelling profile. With composure, stamina and a telling finishing run, he has strengthened his position among the leading three-year-olds of the American season and heads towards Churchill Downs with momentum firmly on his side.
