A Crucial Step on the Road to Churchill Begins in South Florida

A sense of anticipation builds at Gulfstream Park this Saturday as the Coolmore Fountain of Youth (G2) headlines a sweeping 14-race programme featuring nine stakes, eight of them graded, in what shapes as a defining afternoon of the Championship Meet.

At the heart of it all is the 80th running of the $425,000 Coolmore Fountain of Youth (G2), a mile-and-a-sixteenth contest that forms a significant stepping stone on the road to the Kentucky Derby (G1). Among those hoping to seize the moment is Rockies Balboa, a colt arriving in peak form and bidding for a third consecutive victory.

Trained by Dale Romans for Charles Monfort, American Pastimes LLC, Bloom Racing Stable and Edwin Barker, Rockies Balboa has thrived since the calendar turned. The son of Girvin broke through in decisive fashion in December before returning to dominate fellow Florida-breds in January, stretching clear with authority on both occasions.

“Rocky has got a lot of talent,” Romans said this week. “We don’t know what he was beating in those Florida-bred races, but he beat them like you’re supposed to. So, it’s time to step up and see if he’ll go two turns and run with the best.”

Though winless in his first three outings, Rockies Balboa hinted at ability when runner-up in a Keeneland maiden that also featured Commandment, now one of the leading players in the Coolmore Fountain of Youth (G2). Romans believes the extra ground will hold no fears.

“He’s fast, but he doesn’t seem to get tired,” the trainer added. “He worked great Saturday morning and he looked great doing it. He hasn’t missed a beat.”

Romans knows what it takes to spring a surprise in this race, having saddled Promises Fulfilled to score at generous odds in 2018. With momentum on his side, Rockies Balboa enters the Coolmore Fountain of Youth (G2) as an intriguing contender in a field brimming with Classic aspirations.

Coolmore Fountain of Youth (G2) Undercard Brings Depth and Quality

While the feature commands the spotlight, Saturday’s supporting cast is rich in talent.

Whitham Thoroughbreds’ Grade 1 winner Burnham Square returns to action in an optional claiming allowance on turf, launching his four-year-old season for trainer Ian Wilkes. Victorious in last year’s Blue Grass Stakes (G1), Burnham Square also placed in elite company throughout a demanding campaign that included the Florida Derby and Kentucky Derby trail.

“He was a Grade 1 winner on the dirt, which I think he’s not bred for,” Wilkes reflected. “I think he’s more bred for grass. He had a hell of a year.”

Wilkes will also saddle Omaha Bay in the $225,000 Davona Dale (G2), a key prep offering qualifying points toward the Kentucky Oaks (G1). The filly made a striking debut at Gulfstream in December and now faces a deeper assignment stepping into graded company.

Elsewhere, the $100,000 San Cristobal overnight handicap on Tapeta features the accomplished Hades, winner of the 2024 Holy Bull (G3). He meets proven synthetic performers including Classic Mo Town and Prevent in a competitive mile-and-70-yard test.

Across dirt, turf and Tapeta, Saturday’s card underscores Gulfstream’s ability to stage a programme of national significance. Yet all roads lead back to the Coolmore Fountain of Youth (G2), where Derby dreams sharpen into focus and reputations are forged under pressure.
