At Gulfstream Park on Saturday, War to Remember delivered a determined performance to finally get off the mark, holding on bravely to land a maiden claimer and provide trainer Christopher Hall with a long-awaited first career success. The four-year-old gelding, owned by Anthony Minto, showed grit in the closing stages to prevail by a narrow margin after a testing stretch battle.

Christopher Hall first win.

By War of Will, the gelding completed 5½ furlongs on the Tapeta surface in 1:04.78, registering his breakthrough victory at the 13th attempt and his third start since being claimed in early February. The result marked a turning point both for the horse, who had gone close in recent outings, and for his trainer, who had been knocking on the door.

Ridden by Anthony Thomas, War to Remember broke alertly and quickly moved into the lead, covering the opening quarter in 22.82 seconds. He was briefly headed approaching the bend but responded willingly under pressure, regaining the advantage at the top of the stretch and digging deep to hold off Dew in the final strides.

“It feels good. He was the favourite, so I knew he had a big shot,” Hall said. “I thought he would win by further, but I’m glad he won.”

The victory carried added significance for Hall, who has spent nearly two decades working with horses in Florida before setting up on his own just over a year ago. Prior to this success, he had recorded five runner-up finishes and two thirds from 18 starters, repeatedly going close without securing that elusive first win.

“I’ve been training on my own for a year now, but I’ve been dealing with horses for almost 18 years here in Florida,” Hall said. “So far, so good. We had five seconds and now we have this win.”

With seven horses currently under his care at Gulfstream, the result could mark the beginning of a more productive run for the stable. There was also a moment of light-hearted celebration in the winner’s circle, where Hall was doused with a bucket of water by the gelding’s groom, surrounded by friends who had gathered to witness the milestone.

For War to Remember, the success followed two close second-place finishes last month and confirmed his consistency at this level. For Hall, it was a moment of validation after years of work behind the scenes — and perhaps the first of many to come.
