An evening of competitive all-weather flat racing awaits at Chelmsford City Racecourse on Thursday, 12 March, as the Essex venue stages an eight-race programme from 4:49pm through to 8:30pm. Contested on the Polytrack surface, the meeting features a mixture of handicaps, a novice event and a restricted maiden race across distances ranging from seven furlongs to one mile and two furlongs.

The card begins at 4:49pm with The UK Sites Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Stakes. This Class 6 contest over one mile and two furlongs offers £7,000 in prize money and has attracted eight runners. Amateur riders take centre stage in the opening race as middle-distance performers look to make an early impression on the evening card.

Race two at 5:30pm is The New Sites Handicap Stakes, a higher-quality Class 3 contest run over one mile and two furlongs. With ÂŁ15,000 in prize money on offer and six runners declared, the race stands as the most valuable event on the programme and should provide a strong test for the field. Among the contenders is The Glen Rovers GB, a seven-year-old gelding ridden by Sean Dylan Bowen. Carrying 9st 9lbs and holding a BHA rating of 90, the Lucy Wadham-trained runner represents the partnership of Ryan, Waterhouse and Partner and arrives with recent form figures of 11/410-0.

Respond IRE lines up under Oisin Murphy carrying 9st 7lbs for trainer Andrew Balding and the Highclere Thoroughbred Racing Teal ownership. The four-year-old gelding holds a BHA rating of 88 and comes into the race with form figures of 62135-2. Storm Catcher IRE will be partnered by Jack Mitchell for trainer Simon Pearce and carries 9st 6lbs, while Dark Moon Rising IRE is ridden by Jack Callan claiming five pounds for trainer Kevin Ryan and carries 9st 5lbs. Penzance GB, under Billy Loughnane, also carries 9st 5lbs for trainer John Joseph Hanlon, while Qitaal GB completes the field with Callum Shepherd in the saddle carrying 8st 13lbs for trainer Charlie Johnston.

The third race at 6:00pm features The Best Sites Fillies’ Novice Stakes. Run over seven furlongs, the Class 4 contest carries £10,000 in prize money and has drawn a field of ten runners. As a novice event restricted to fillies, the race offers developing horses the opportunity to gain valuable experience and potentially secure an early career success.

Attention then shifts to the 6:30pm contest, The Tiger.co.uk Handicap Stakes, a Class 6 race over seven furlongs worth ÂŁ7,000. With 12 runners declared, this race is set to be one of the most competitive on the card as a large field lines up for the sprint-distance challenge.

At 7:00pm, runners line up for The Tiger.co.uk Restricted Maiden Stakes over one mile. This Class 5 event carries a prize fund of ÂŁ8,500 and features nine runners. Restricted maiden contests often showcase emerging talent, and this race could reveal promising performers stepping forward for the first time.

The 7:30pm race is The Tiger.co.uk Handicap Stakes, a Class 4 contest over one mile offering ÂŁ10,000 in prize money. Eight runners are set to compete, with the distance providing a balanced test of both speed and stamina.

Another Class 4 mile contest follows at 8:00pm, again titled The Tiger.co.uk Handicap Stakes. With the same £10,000 prize fund and eight runners declared, the race adds further depth to the middle-distance contests on the evening’s programme.

The meeting concludes at 8:30pm with The Tiger.co.uk Handicap Stakes over one mile. This Class 5 finale offers £8,500 in prize money and features five runners. Although the smallest field on the card, the closing contest should still provide an engaging finish to the evening’s racing at Chelmsford City.

With a balanced mix of handicaps, a novice contest and a restricted maiden race, Thursday evening’s programme at Chelmsford City promises an entertaining night of all-weather flat racing.
