National Hunt Action Returns to Carlisle with Varied Seven-Race Card

A busy Tuesday schedule of National Hunt action will unfold in northern England as Carlisle prepares to welcome runners and connections for a seven-race programme across hurdles, steeplechases and a concluding flat contest. The meeting, highlighted in the Carlisle Race Cards 3 February, will run from early afternoon through late day, assembling varied fields across multiple distances at the Cumbrian venue.

The opening event, THE NOVICES’ HURDLE RACE (CLASS 4), will start at 1:30pm over 2m 1f 52y with a prize fund of £10,000 and a field of 12 runners expected to line up. Among those set to feature prominently will be Blazing Echo under Peter Kavanagh, Delayed Charm partnered by Ross Chapman, Double Indemnity with Theo Gillard aboard, alongside It’s Top ridden by Gavin Sheehan and Jonzac guided by Toby Wynne.

At 2:00pm, the programme will continue with THE ‘CHASING EXCELLENCE’ BEGINNERS’ STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 3), run over 2m 5f 8y for £15,000 in prize money and attracting four declared runners. First Confession with Brendan Powell, Scarlet Jet under Bruce Lynn, Thank You Ma’am partnered by Finn Lambert, and Della Casa Lunga ridden by Richard Patrick are all expected to contest the race.

The afternoon will move on at 2:35pm with THE EBF MARES’ NATIONAL HUNT NOVICES’ HURDLE RACE (CLASS 4), to be run across 2m 3f 119y for £11,000. Eight runners are due to compete, including Future Bucks with Gavin Sheehan, Just An Artist under Bruce Lynn, Oh Clare partnered by Jonjo O’Neill Jr., Am I Bovvered with Patrick Wadge aboard, and Bollin Skittle ridden by Craig Nichol.

The card will then shift to fences again at 3:05pm for THE MARES’ HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 4), where six mares will tackle 2m 5f 8y for a prize purse of £12,750. Ilovethenightlife with Brendan Powell, Lady In The Park under Derek Fox, Sunset Hill ridden by Nathan Moscrop, Celestial Fashion partnered by Callum Bewley, and Similar Story guided by Sean Quinlan are among the expected runners.

At 3:35pm, THE HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (CLASS 4) will be contested over 2m 1f 52y, offering £11,500 in prize money and featuring an anticipated field of 11 runners. Smart Decision under Mr William Easterby, Kientzheim with Kevin Brogan, Dunkerque partnered by Sean Quinlan, Medieval Gold ridden by Brian Hughes, and That One with Callum Bewley are expected to play key roles.

Stamina will come into focus at 4:04pm in THE HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 5), run across 3m 165y for £10,000, where 14 runners are set to go to post. Orkney Blue with Kevin Brogan, Wholly Boley under Theo Gillard, Super Citizen partnered by Brian Hughes, Shadow Chaser ridden by Jamie Hamilton, and Raceview Road guided by Jonathon Bewley are expected contenders in the staying event.

The meeting will conclude at 4:34pm with THE “JUNIOR” NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE (CLASS 5), staged over 2m 1f 52y and offering £4,000 in prize money. Seven runners are expected, including Barracilla under Jonjo O’Neill Jr., Irish Goodbye with Toby McCain-Mitchell, Jimmy Gatz ridden by James Bowen, Marvel Magic partnered by Derek Fox, and Masked Blagny under Charlie Hammond.

With a mix of novice contests, mares’ races and competitive handicaps across both hurdles and fences, Carlisle’s programme will provide opportunities for developing prospects and experienced campaigners alike, ensuring a full and varied afternoon of winter racing action.
