Calandagan, Ombudsman and Almaqam Lead an Outstanding Field for British Champions Day at Ascot

British Champions Day at Ascot featuring Europe’s leading Group 1 racehorses
By | 13 Oct 2026 | Mumbai

Ascot Racecourse will stage the 16th edition of British Champions Day on Saturday, 17 October 2026, with leading horses from across Europe set to compete across a seven-race programme featuring five Group 1 contests. Eight horses currently ranked among the top 20 in the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings will be among the confirmed runners, adding considerable depth to Britain’s richest raceday and the grand finale of the Flat racing season.

The £1.3 million Qatar Racing Champion Stakes will headline the meeting at 4:00 PM, with 11 horses confirmed for the prestigious 10-furlong contest. Last year’s first three finishers, Calandagan, Ombudsman and Almaqam, will feature among the leading names alongside Bay City Roller, Constitution River, Gstaad and Hotazhell. Collectively, these runners will bring an impressive record of 11 Group 1 victories this season across five countries.

The Champion Stakes will provide a significant test of quality, stamina and tactical ability, with several established performers set to meet emerging challengers. The presence of multiple international Group 1 winners will give the race a particularly competitive outlook, while the return of last year’s leading finishers will add further interest to the contest.

British Champions Day Champion Stakes to Feature Elite Field

Bay City Roller will arrive at Ascot in strong condition following his recent appearance in Paris, according to trainer George Scott. The trainer will be looking for another high-level performance from a horse whose consistency will make him a notable contender. Although a mile and a half will probably represent his optimum distance, Scott will have no concerns about the demanding 10-furlong trip at Ascot.

Ombudsman, Calandagan and Almaqam will provide formidable opposition, while Gstaad will face a step up in distance. The quality of the confirmed field will make the Champion Stakes one of the meeting’s principal attractions.

Hotazhell will also seek to add another major success to his record under Irish trainer Jessica Harrington. Following his victory in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown, he will aim to become only the third horse since 2011 to win both the Irish Champion Stakes and the Qatar Racing Champion Stakes in the same season, after Almanzor in 2016 and Magical in 2019.

The form of his Leopardstown performance will receive further attention following Wimbledon Hawkeye’s subsequent victory in the Group 2 Qatar Prix Dollar at Longchamp. Hotazhell will head to Ascot after a satisfactory preparation, with Harrington hopeful of securing another prestigious result before the horse’s planned retirement to stud at Haras d’Etreham in France and Widden Stud in Australia.

Constitution River will also hold a supplementary entry in the £1.1 million Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, leaving trainer Aidan O’Brien to decide between the two major contests.

Queen Elizabeth II Stakes to Deliver a Strong Mile Contest

The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes will take place at 3:20 PM over the straight mile, with 13 entries following the supplementary addition of Talk Of New York for Charlie Appleby. The field will include Queen Anne Stakes winner Ten Bob Tony, Irish Guineas winner Gstaad and French Group 1 double winner Rayif.

The race will bring together accomplished milers and horses with proven performances at the highest level. The final running plans for Constitution River will remain an important factor in shaping the field before declarations.

Long-Distance Cup to Renew Rivalry Between Scandinavia and Caballo De Mar

The Qatar Racing British Champions Long Distance Cup will open the Group 1 programme at 1:30 PM, with 12 confirmations for the staying contest. Scandinavia and Caballo De Mar will be among the leading names, potentially renewing their rivalry following their meeting in the Prix du Cadran at Longchamp.

Caballo De Mar will head to Ascot after finishing ahead of Gold Cup winner Scandinavia in Paris. Trainer George Scott will look to maintain the horse’s freshness and continue the training approach that has supported his recent progress. However, Scandinavia will be expected to provide a strong response on a track where he has previously produced dominant performances.

Highwayman, the St Leger winner, will also feature after being supplemented by Joseph O’Brien. The trainer will be encouraged by the horse’s preparation since Doncaster, although the step up in distance and the challenge of older rivals will provide a demanding examination. Dylan Browne McMonagle will be expected to return to the saddle for the weekend after resuming riding during the week.

Amiloc will represent Ralph Beckett following a confidence-boosting conditions-race victory at Salisbury. The trainer will consider two miles the horse’s ideal distance and will look for another positive performance at a course where Amiloc has previously shown good form.

Sprint and Fillies’ Contests to Add Depth to Ascot Programme

The Qatar Racing British Champions Sprint Stakes will take place at 2:05 PM, with 17 sprinters confirmed. Almeraq, regarded as Europe’s leading sprinter, will be among the principal attractions, while Soul Love will join the field following a supplementary entry for Karl Burke.

The contest will feature an international collection of speedsters. Prix Maurice de Gheest winner Samangan will represent France, while Irish-trained Power Blue will bring his Minstrel Stakes success into the race. Great Wish, a Group 3 winner at Deauville this year, will add a Danish presence to the line-up.

The Qatar Racing British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes will follow at 2:40 PM, with 15 entries headed by Kalpana, a two-time winner of the race and heroine of the King George. Irish Oaks winner Johanna Walsh will provide strong opposition alongside fellow three-year-olds Sparan Nua and Lilt. Tajlina, trained by Francis-Henri Graffard, and See The Fire, trained by Andrew Balding, will also join the contest through supplementary entries.

Two-Year-Olds to Open the Day Before Balmoral Stakes Finale

The meeting will begin at 12:55 PM with the Qatar Racing British Champions Day Two-Year-Old Conditions Stakes, a £250,000 contest featuring 18 entries. Aidan O’Brien will have four possible representatives in Bengal Tiger, Carry The Flag, Confucius and Marco Polo. Gimcrack winner Arapaho Gold will also be among the entries for Michael Dods, while Group 2 winners Inner City Blues and Nabati could represent Charlie Appleby. Night In Vegas will be another contender for Eve Johnson Houghton.

The Balmoral Stakes, sponsored by Qatar Racing, will close the programme at 4:35 PM. A total of 54 horses will have been confirmed for the handicap, although the maximum field will be limited to 20 runners. Last year’s winner Crown Of Oaks will be among the entries.

Ascot Going and Conditions Ahead of British Champions Day

Ascot’s course officials will continue preparations with the going currently reported as Good on both the straight and round courses. GoingStick readings taken at 10:00 AM on Monday, 12 October, will provide the latest reference point, with readings of 8.2 on the straight course and 7.1 on the round course.

Clerk of the Course and Head of Racing Chris Stickels will expect the track to remain on its normal Flat course. Some early-week showers and 2–5 millimetres of rain forecast from Thursday night into Friday will be monitored, although the current expectation will be for Good ground across both courses unless the forecast changes significantly.

With leading performers across the sprint, mile, middle-distance and staying divisions set to assemble, British Champions Day will offer a high-class conclusion to the British Flat racing season. The seven-race programme will combine established Group 1 champions, international challengers and promising younger horses, with the Champion Stakes expected to provide one of the afternoon’s principal highlights.
