Ombudsman Returns to Sandown in Brigadier Gerard Stakes

Ombudsman and rivals heading to post in Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown Park

The European summer campaign gathers early momentum this week as several high-class performers assemble for the G3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown Park, a race that has increasingly served as a key stepping stone for major mid-season targets. Among them is Ombudsman, who returns to the scene of a notable effort last year with his reputation now firmly established at the top level.

Sandown Park hosts a renewal that brings together proven Group performers and emerging talents shaping their seasons around Royal Ascot ambitions.

Ombudsman, trained by John & Thady Gosden, was runner-up in this very contest 12 months ago before progressing to decisive victories in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Juddmonte International at York. He rounded off a standout campaign as one of the highest-rated horses in the world before making a striking return when landing the Dubai Turf on Dubai World Cup night.

His reappearance at Sandown is viewed as an important early-season marker as connections map out another demanding top-level programme.

Standing in his way are two representatives from Charlie Appleby’s powerful yard, both of whom bring contrasting but closely matched form lines from Dubai earlier in the year. Arabian Light arrives after edging Bedouin Prince in a January handicap at Meydan, with that rival subsequently going close in Group company and later finishing runner-up in Bahrain.

Appleby’s pair also arrive with differing preparation routes, but both are expected to progress as their seasons unfold.

Ombudsman gets his European campaign underway with a repeat appearance in the G3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown Park.

John Gosden, speaking alongside Thady Gosden, said the race has been deliberately targeted to bring their stable star forward before bigger summer objectives. He noted the colt’s structured preparation through the winter months and the decision to regroup after Dubai with the long-term campaign in mind.

Charlie Appleby, meanwhile, highlighted that his duo are firmly on a Royal Ascot trajectory, with this outing expected to provide clarity rather than peak performance. He indicated that both horses should improve with the run as they build towards longer-term targets later in the season.

Elsewhere on the card, Dubai Future adds further depth to the meeting in the G3 Henry II Stakes. Now a seasoned campaigner, he arrives for Saeed bin Suroor after a solid return in the Sagaro Stakes at Ascot, where he stayed on well from the rear to finish fourth. The veteran, who has previously landed major staying prizes in Dubai and performed with credit in top staying contests in Britain, is being aimed once again at the Gold Cup later in the summer.

The feature supporting action also includes a competitive renewal of the Listed Heron Stakes, where Charlie Appleby fields a notably strong hand. Opera Ballo, last year’s winner of the race, is joined by Talk Of New York, an impressive Newmarket scorer who has been earmarked as a potential contender for higher honours. Time To Turn, unbeaten last season in the Horris Hill Stakes, returns from a break, while Nation’s Hope brings perfect form after two commanding wins at Kempton Park. Maximized completes a four-strong team for the yard.

Appleby suggested the race will help shape future targets across the summer, with particular attention on whether Talk Of New York can step towards elite company, and how the remainder of his quartet measure up at this stage of their development.
