Deadline Approaches for Breeders’ Cup Foal Nominations as Fees Prepare to Triple

Breeders’ Cup foal nominations deadline on October 15, 2026, for eligible Thoroughbreds
By | 13 Oct 2026 | Mumbai

Breeders’ Cup foal nominations for eligible horses born in 2026 will close at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, October 15, giving breeders and foal nominators a final opportunity to secure lifetime eligibility for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships and associated racing programmes at a one-time fee of $400. The nomination cost will increase to $1,500 from October 16, 2026, through February 28, 2027.

Breeders’ Cup Limited issued the reminder on October 12, highlighting the approaching deadline for the 2026 foal crop. The closing date will mark the final opportunity to nominate eligible foals at the initial weanling rate before the fee rises significantly for applications made during the extended nomination period.

Breeders’ Cup Foal Nominations Offer Lifetime Championship Eligibility

The $400 weanling nomination will provide each eligible foal with lifetime eligibility for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships and the organisation’s racing programmes. Foals born in 2026 and sired by fully nominated North American Breeders’ Cup stallions will qualify for nomination at the weanling rate during their year of birth.

The nomination will maintain its significance throughout a horse’s racing career, including if ownership changes. The individual who nominates the foal will remain eligible for the associated nominator awards under the programme’s provisions, even if the horse is subsequently sold or transferred to another owner.

The fee structure will give breeders and other eligible nominators an incentive to complete the process before October 15. Those who miss the initial deadline will face a $1,500 nomination fee from October 16 through February 28, 2027.

Nominator Awards Will Recognise International Success

The Breeders’ Cup programme will also provide financial awards to foal nominators through its international racing initiatives. Under the programme, nominators will receive $10,000 for every victory achieved in the worldwide Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series: Win and You’re In. In addition, every horse that starts in a Breeders’ Cup World Championships race will generate a nominator award.

These provisions will allow the original nominator to retain a financial connection to a horse’s achievements throughout its career, regardless of subsequent ownership changes. The awards will form part of the wider programme supporting breeders, nominators and owners involved in international Thoroughbred racing.

For more than 40 years, Breeders’ Cup Limited has organised the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, an annual international festival bringing together leading Thoroughbreds and their connections from across the globe. Through its championships and associated programmes, the organisation has allocated more than $1 billion in purses and awards to owners, foal nominators and stallion nominators.

The scale of these programmes has established the Breeders’ Cup as a significant fixture on the international Thoroughbred calendar, while its nomination system has provided a route for eligible horses to retain access to championship opportunities as they progress through their racing careers.

Online Nominations Available Before the Deadline

Breeders and other eligible applicants will be able to submit nominations through the official Breeders’ Cup membership portal. Applications must be completed by 11:59 p.m. ET on October 15 to qualify for the $400 weanling nomination fee.
