Breeders’ Cup Charities has launched its second Annual Day of Giving with a significant boost from philanthropist and racehorse owner Ken Freirich, whose $100,000 matching pledge is expected to increase support for charities serving the Thoroughbred racing industry. The fundraising initiative takes place 100 days before the 2026 Breeders’ Cup World Championships, scheduled for October 30-31 at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky.

The campaign encourages racing enthusiasts, owners and industry participants to contribute towards programmes that support retired Thoroughbreds, jockey welfare, stable staff, equine research and other community initiatives connected to the sport. Donations made during the designated fundraising day will be matched by Freirich up to a total of $100,000.
The Breeders’ Cup Charities Annual Day of Giving continues to expand its reach after a successful inaugural campaign. In 2025, the initiative raised more than $672,000 through individual contributions and industry support, with over $200,000 collected during the single-day fundraising event.
Breeders’ Cup Charities allocates all funds raised directly to nonprofit organisations working within the Thoroughbred industry. Alongside public donations, the charity is supported through royalties generated from official Breeders’ Cup merchandise, ensuring continued funding for organisations dedicated to equine welfare and the people who work across the sport.
Freirich’s latest contribution forms part of a broader $500,000 commitment announced last year, with the funding scheduled to be distributed over a three-and-a-half-year period. The matching pledge is intended to encourage wider participation and increase the overall impact of the fundraising campaign.
Several established organisations are set to benefit from the Breeders’ Cup Charities Annual Day of Giving in 2026, including the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation and the Race Track Chaplaincy of America. These organisations provide assistance in areas ranging from retired racehorse care and equine medical research to jockey support and services for the wider racing workforce.
The fundraising effort extends beyond the Annual Day of Giving. Additional opportunities to support the charity will be available through official merchandise sales, ticket purchases for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, selected event activities, memorabilia auctions and voluntary owner contributions linked to championship runners.
